call forward calls but not text messages

I am traveling to Europe next week. Even with the International roaming plan the per minute cost is still expense. Text messaging is not expensive. Free to receive and 50c to send.
I want to receive incoming texts but not calls. The ATT customer service rep told me to forward my Iphone to my home number and if friends called my iphone number it forwards instantly and does not roam.

While my incoming calls are forwarded, my SMS text would remain the same on my phone. I can make and receive texts.
Could someone confirm - before I leave the USA and incur a huge bill - that I will not collect roaming charges if I have my iphone on yet the calls are being forwarded to my USA number.
(Note - of course I will have the Data roaming turned "off" also).

and so I will not be charged for roaming - great. When my calls are forwarded to my home phone I plan on having a message telling people to text me instead. I can receive texts for free, even in Europe.
I can reply to texts for 50c each and in an emergency can always make an outgoing call at the roaming rate.

Ukap, I'm so glad I found this thread. I am in the same position: will travel to Italy on May 6 and only want some way to be contacted in an emergency. So forwarding calls to a number in US, and still leaving the phone on to get an emergency text message. I didn't realize incoming text was free, that's even better. And I'm glad you mentioned about the data roaming. Reading these forums I get lots of different information.

So, when you get back from you trip and check your bill, could you do one last post to confirm that all worked as planned? Thanks again!

Your forwarded voice calls are packet switched from your mobile carrier to your landline provider: they will not be directed to your iPhone at all.
