Turning off monitor detection?

Is there a way to turn of monitor auto-detection. I am using a kvm and have the a monitor hooked up as primary desktop on external dvi connector. Using iMac display as secondary monitor. Every time I use kvm to switch to another monitor the resolution gets reset and the anything i have on the secondary (main iMac) screen gets shifted over because primary sceens is resized to a lower resolution. How can i turn off autodetection or lock in the main screen resolution?

Intel iMac, Mac OS X (10.5.2)

Hi calaban9

Welcome to Apple Discussions

Turn off Mirroring!

If you use Extended Desktop you can choose a resolution for each display, that should not change when the external is switched off.

Resolutions

+When you connect the adapter to the computer, the screen may refresh momentarily as the computer prepares itself for the new video output. When the computer is mirroring video, it tries to synchronize the resolution of the built-in and external displays. If they can't be matched, the computer will change the resolution of both screens to the highest common resolution which may cause areas of the built-in display to be blacked out.+

No, just the reverse of what the above article say's:

+When you connect the adapter to the computer, the screen may refresh momentarily as the computer prepares itself for the new video output.+

When the Projector or TV are turned off the current display settings are saved until the adapter is disconnected!

For quick access to adjusting your display preferences, go to the iMac display preference panel and check the box "☑ Show displays in menu bar"
