Apple memory gone goofy

Hello

a few days ago my apple memory apparently went bad. My old config listed below

A1 - 1g original apple mem
A2 - 1g "
B1 - 1g Purchased apple mem
B2 - 1g "

Then out of nowhere, no update, nothing installed that I recall, "both" original apple memory modules were reporting only being 512Mb. Noticed by opening system profiler and caught that it was reporting 3 gigs of RAM. Completely threw me off. I did however install VMware fusion and specified it could use 1024 megs of RAM, after which is when I noticed it. Though, no telling when it could have happened.
I reset PVRAM, let it unplugged for a time, reseated the mem, all of which didn't solve it. I ran tech tool pro and it reported the same numbers in each Dimm position.

Yesterday I received 8 gigs of ram and installed that into my machine, repositioning the existing RAM... listed below

A1 - 2g New module
A2 - 2g "
A3 - 1g Original apple mem
A4 - 1g "
B1 - 2g New module
B2 - 2g "
B3 - 1g Purchased apple mem
B4 - 1g "

Opened up system prof. only to see that the mods. in A3 - A4 were STILL reporting 512mb as their RAM. Ran tech tool again with same results. All other memory is working properly and reporting proper numbers. But not the two. Status says their OK, but those are not the right numbers. It's as it both modules lost 1/2 of their functionality.

Any help before I drive 3 hours to the nearest apple store?

No ECC errors in any of the ASP logs ?

From memory (no pun) you seem to have the memory installed in the right slots. The Mac Pro manual has a chapter dedicated to exectly where to install which DIMMs to get them to work. When I got my new memory for my MP, I kust put in in slots in any order and got the same as you see.

There is a chance that the memory reporting half size or as empty, is cooked. It should have a lifetime warranty, so time to get it changed.

I'm actually going to run AHT. though the mac pro appears to be hung. after booting the mac pro into AHT, the computer symbol appeared for 2 secs. I selected language and it began probing the mac. the status bar filled in 5 secs, then showed the barber shop twirl, appearantly hanging the mac leaving keyboard/mouse commands unregistered. I've read that this process can take some time.. but it's been "hung" for about 10 mins now. I'll leave it running to see if it'll eventually let me begin the testing, or until someone says it really is, and something is conflicting proper functionality.

alright, after leaving briefly, I've come back to find the mac sitting still on the same screen. The status bar did not update and keyboard and mouse were still unresponsive. I've tried running it a few times with the same effect happening. It freezes. Just a thought, could it be the new RAM? I purchased the 8G from memoryamerica. the RAM according to system prof. doesn't exactly have a "serial number"... just all 0's. But it works fine while running the OS.
