entourage - relay not permitted?

im at a friends house with my macbook - ive hooked into their wireless connection, got online fine and also checked my email with no problem... its only when ive tried to reply to one of the emails that there has been a problem.. it wont send!

i just the following error message:

"error - relay not permitted
explanation - cannot send mail. the smtp sever does not recognize any of the authentication methods supported by entourage. try changing the smtp authentication options in account settings or contact your network administrator.

error - 17092"

anyone know why its not letting me send?

Most email providers do not allow email to be sent from outside their network. This is to prevent the mail server from being used to send spam. Unless your email provider allows access to the mail service through a web page, you will be able to check mail from your friend's house but will not be able to send until you get home.

If you really need to use your e-mail frequently at this location, then you might consider using PostFix enabler, it may require some configuration and a learning curve, but it may allow you to use your MacBook's built-in mail server to send mail in these situations where your ISP's mail server is blocked for some reason...I'm not sure if this would work in your situation or not.

As Dave noted, your ISP only lets you send email through its network when you are connected to its network. Your problem was caused by the fact that you were connected through a different ISP therefore you were unknowingly attempting to relay your email through your friend's ISP to your own. This used to be a favorite tactic of SPAMmers so most mail servers now prohibit it.

If it turns out that you frequently need to send email when you aren't connected to the internet via your own ISP, getting a Google email account would solve your problem. You can pretty much use GMail's mailserver anywhere.

Good point about GMail, just wanted to add that I don't think the IMAP/POP/? mail server is enabled by default with a new GMail web-mail account, but that feature can be activated in the account settings so that you can use it with your favorite (Mail.app, Entourage, Eudora, etc) e-mail software.

Right you are - and you'll want to check out Gmail's instructions because it doesn't use default ports. Still - lots of good reasons to use gmail and this is just one of them. I've now made gmail my default email server.

thanks for the replies... i actually made it work i the end... i tried what it asked in the error message so went into the account settings and tried changing things in the smtp server advanced sending options...

i ticked a box that says "smtp server requires authentication box" and then another box that says "use same settings as receiving mail server"

and now it lets me send mail!

You can use the authentication method all the time, either at home or away.
