External DVD -R drive - advice needed please.

Hi,
I was wondering somebody can give me some advice. I have two questions.
I have in the past bought external Hard drives from places like PC World that don't mention anything about mac compatibility, but always work fine. Is this the same for external DVD writers? My local PC World has a clearance on some pretty decent writers from companies like sony, freecom etc. It doesn't mention mac compatibility, but will they work - or do they require drivers? Both are firewire drives.
Secondly - Is there such a thing as a region free dvd writer? I have a number of both region 1 and region 2 dvds. I would like to rip a selection to my hard drive for travel, but mac the ripper cant rip 'wrong region' dvds from my powerbook dvd writer (a known issues with the powerbook Matshita drive apparently). The drive by now is locked to region 1.
