Transferring recordings from sky plus to macbook pro

Does anyone know how I can transfer recorded programmes from my sky+ box to my mac? I've been hit a few times when the sky box crashes and needs replacing resulting in me losing some treasured recordings. I did have a DVD recorder but that has recently broken and thought there must be a way to make use of my mac's HDD and external HDD's rather than buying a new DVD recorder.

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.5.2)

i'm fairly sure sky take steps to make it difficult to do this, encrypted files etc.

fwiw i don't have sky and ditched my cable service when freeview came along and got a topfield pvr, these do allow you to pull off the files for backup

you could digitise the analogue rf out, but there'd be a quality drop

you can get a unit from elgato that will connect direct to your mac and give you full record facilities, if you use elgato's eyetv hybrid it does both analogue and dtt, so you could use the analogue side to record sky stuff, and the dtt side for freeview channels...
