BenQ M310 USB mouse problems w Tiger -> 10.4.2 update

As reported last April by Dave Moy in BenQ M310 USB mouse w iBook problems w Tiger, neither the OS X 10.4.1 update or yesterday's OS X 10.4.2 update have yielded any fixes:

i When using the BenQ M310 wireless mouse, the cursor tracks correctly, but all clicks result in the cursor immediately jumping to the upper-leftmost screen corner, and then the click-down being processed, which drops the "Apple" menu.

The 3rd-party $US 20 shareware Preference Pane, <a href="<a href="http://www.usboverdrive.com/">USBoverdrive, continues to provide a work-around in order to use a BenQ M310 wireless USB mouse under Tiger OS X 10.4.2.

hope this helps other BenQ M310 owners,

best, ...ben

b Note:
the underlying problem appears to be that the BenQ M310 mouse is being incorrectly recognized by Tiger as a graphics tablet! When the BenQ M310 USB receiver is plugged in, the
b Inkwell
preference pane, used for handwriting recognition, becomes visible in the list of preference panes. When the BenQ M310 USB receiver is removed, the
b Inkwell
preference pane disappears.

Maybe you can try feedback to Benq.

Hi Wu,

Yeah, that's the first thing I tried back in May, before posting to Apple Discussions Forums.

I didn't find any mention of the OS X Tiger/BenQ M310 incompatibility on the BenQ support website: http://support.benq.com/ When I reported problem to BenQ at eSupport@BenQ.com, I received this reply:

"--------Replied by CSD Adriana Huizar at 2005/05/12 01:01:18--------
This new OS version (codename: Tiger) just came out. The options are to wait for Apple to launch a patch file to fix these bugs."

I also sent a new email to BenQ earlier today that the incompatibility of their BenQ M310 wireless mouse with Tiger OS X 10.4, remains after the 10.4.1 and 10.4.2 updates to OS X by Apple.

And I would appreciate if other BenQ M310 owners would also report the Tiger incompatibility to eSupport@BenQ.com.

As I noted, the problem seems to be that the BenQ M310 is being recognized by Tiger as a Graphics Tablet and not as a mouse. When the BenQ USB receiver is plugged in, the
b Inkwell
preference pane becomes visible when selecting 'Show All' preference panes. When the USB receiver is unplugged, then the
b Inkwell
preference pane no longer appears in the 'Show All" listing of preference panes. The puzzling aspect of this problem is why does the BenQ M310
b work
under Panther?

best regards,
...ben

b Note:
The BenQ M310 wireless mouse does not come with any drivers from BenQ for Mac OS X. It's supposed to not need any.

Hi Benjamin,

Thank you for posting this. I called the toll-free number you mentioned (it rings in California), and the service rep told me he would forward my contact info to someone who could send me a new receiver.

This was the 3rd contact I have made with BenQ about the BenQ M310 and OS X 10.4: an initial web-form service request on 9-May-2005, and a 2nd one on 8-Sept-2005 following
b Wu's
posting. The web-form responses were to wait for an OS X patch from Apple. But the phone number response was more promising.

Fingers crossed,

Hi Dave,

Guess it takes a few days more to get to the Great White North, but I just received my replacement BenQ M310 wireless mouse receiver today, after phoning on 13-Sep, and now I can use my BenQ M310 mouse
b without
resorting to USB Overdrive. Excellent! When BenQ makes a BlueTooth version, I'll certainly buy that also.

best regards,
...ben

PS.
b Dennis Evangelista,
no offense intended, but it's probably better to just open a new thread on your graphics tablet problem if you haven't already, as someone knowledgeable on Wacom Graphire 4x5 bluetooth tablets and Tiger would likely miss your post in a thread entitled:

Hi ben,

I just received my receiver up here in Canada as well, after about 7 days wait. I was wondering if it takes about 10 seconds for your PowerBook to 'recognize' the mouse every time the receiver is plugged in.

It seems that every time I plug the receiver in, there is a delay of about 10 seconds before my mouse becomes responsive. I thought this was a problem of USB overdrive's, but the new receiver has not fixed it for me.

It would be great to hear from anyone about this!

Hi Robber,

If I plug in my replacement USB receiver for my BenQ M310 mouse and start moving the mouse immediately, while counting one-thousand-and-one, one-thousand-and-two..., then my cursor starts moving when I reach one-thousand-and-four.

If the USB receiver is already inserted, and I put my PB G4 to sleep, then I can wake it my moving the mouse, and the cursor is moving when the screen alights.

Of course, this now begs the question: why the difference? I uninstalled
b USB Overdrive
after I got my replacement BenQ M310 USB receiver. Did you? Do you know if you have any other 3rd-party kernel extensions installed? They'd be in /System/Library/Extensions, but there are 100's there so you can't easily tell by looking. I'm also plugging the USB receiver directly into the PB G4, and I'm not using any other USB device. And of course, there's always that old trick of creating a new Account with the
b Accounts
preference pane, and logging into it, to see if the problem persists in the new Account.

best of luck,
...ben
