Ever since I upgraded to Tiger 10.4.2 I haven't been able to use the scsi adapter that shipped with my G4. The machine only gets as far as the blue screen before I get the "you must restart" dialog. Adaptec says that the drivers for OS X are built-in after 10.2 and does not offer a fix. I have to unplug the chain and terminate at the card to get it to work. Any thoughts or fixes would be greatly appreciated.

Adaptec does not support your device anymore. This basically means you are out of luck, unless you can get someone to write you a driver. Your only option is to go back to a supported OS or to get a new SCSI card.

I did visit the Adaptec page you cite, but I was under the impression that Apple was still integrating the driver within the OS. Adaptec hasn't released a new driver since before Jaguar. I'm curious why Panther worked without a hitch but not Tiger. Anyway, thanks for your reply. Looks like I'm stuck. Do you know anything about the SCSI to firewire adapters?
Those from Ratoc are good.

Also Acard has favorable SCSI cards. www.acard.com
You can get an U160 card for under $150!
There are also ATTO www.attotech.com (great but, costly) and Initio.

Same problem here.
Adaptec AHA-2930** SCSI card causes a kernel panic when booting Mac OS X 10.4.2 if an external SCSI CD-R is turned on (no problem if it is turned off). No problem with Mac OS X 10.3.9 or earlier versions.
The culprit seems to be the driver: Adaptec290X-2930.kext
Apple has not yet updated such driver (dated 2002), but has updated other drivers for Adaptec cards. These are in "/System/Library/Extensions":
---
The drivers below are dated 2002:
Adaptec290X-2930.kext
Adaptec29160x.kext
Adaptec39160.kext
--
But Adaptec78XXSCSI.kext is dated 26 March 2005!!!
---
So Apple could just update them all or at least the culprit in this case: Adaptec290X-2930.kext
Thanks.

I think, IF Apple is updating a KEXT then the 2930 only, cuz Apple sold this card as an option with the MDD's.
For the 29160, 39160 (I have one too) no chance I think.

In fact, I purchased a PowerMac G4/500 AGP with Apple Cinema Display 22-inch for about 14,000 US$ from Apple with such Adaptec 2930 SCSI card inside.
So I guess Apple should fix this problem.
Apple: please, please, please. Thanks!

Gabriel,
the ideal place for your pleas is the feedback page. Here (almost) no one (from Apple) will hear you.

To fix this problem, just get in touch with AppleCare. They will send you the application Data Capture 7.0.3 or later to fix it.

Hello Gabriel,
I don't have Applecare on my 6 years-old G4, but I do have a 2930 card, that stopped working when I upgraded to Tiger. Sad, because it used to drive my SCSI tape-drive, that I used for backups.
Is there another way to get hold of the 'Data Capture' application?
Please respond to me directly at: adam@vangaalen.homeip.net

Adam,
There is no need to have AppleCare. You just get in touch with Apple, AppleStore or AppleCare, direct them to this thread or --better-- to this one:
Home > Mac OS X > Mac OS X v10.4 Tiger > Installation & Setup > No luck getting Adaptec 2906 SCSI card to work
and they will let you know how to proceed.
I am also sending you the Capture Data 7.03 application (Apple may have a newer version), but as said, that is useless until you get in touch with Apple because they and only they must tell you where to send the report generated by Data Capture.

Oops!
The name of the application is "Capture Data"; not "Data Capture".
