Setting Up VPN?!?!!?

I use the Witopia PersonalVPN service on my ipod touch. Works fine.

To be honest, if you don't know what it is, you likely don't need it and don't have access to it.

VPN -Virtual Private Network(ing) is a way to securely connect - usually to a business network requiring credentials - an account, password, etc.

I use VPN to get into my work servers as an example.

A VPN creates an encrypted "tunnel" between your computer and the server hosting the VPN like Witopia. Nobody can see the info inside your "tunnel" even your ISP. It's about the most secure you can be using the net. When using a VPN you're even safe when connected to an open wi-fi hotspot. Using a VPN is a good idea if you also use alot of hotspots are hotels, airports, coffee shops, ect. You never know exactly how they're network is setup and what if any security precautions they are taking, let alone who is in charge of that network.

In simple terms, a VPN is like having a LAN (Local Area Network) setup between some PCs over the Internet. Is exactly what it's name says - a Virtual Private Network.


Do ISPs ban tunnelling? Or does it depend on what you do with them?

Never heard of an ISP banning use of a VPN. Not sure they could even tell what you were doing since all the data is encrypted and they have no way of unencrypting it.
