Keyboard Shortcut to Maximise Window??

OK

So I can Command - W and Command -M to close and minimise windows, what's the keyboard shortcut to maximise the size of the window I am in.

Aiming my mouse pointer at the little green glog in the top left hand corner of the front window is getting tedious!!

Wife's new iMac has 10.4.2 and I was kinda hoping that there might be a combination of keys that'd do the trick.

I'm a tad perplexed, I don't mind using the Green Dot, but it isn't consistent. 😟 Arggh! If I understand this correctly, holding Option, while clicking the green dot, should maximize the window.

It doesn't produce what I want though. In iTunes it maximizes the screen horizontally, not vertically. In Hwlp Viewer it works. Safari maximizes vertically, not horizontally! Isn't there something that will maximize both directions for all apps?

Thanks,

PS - This has got to be one of my most annoying conversion issues when going from a Windows platform.
