Unarchiving

I am using the archiving function of Tiger to create backups for files, mail, etc. I archive on a regular basis. I just developed a requirement to unarchive / restore an old copy of a certain file. I do not want to over write the current file. In my experience I have been able to look at the detail of the archived (zip) file and open an old file into a new folder. When I double clicked on the archive file it started to open. I waited for about 15 seconds to see what would happen and then I stopped it because I was afraid that the files it was opening were over writing live data.

Questions:

How do I restore / unarchive a single file?

What exactly happens when unarchive is activatied? Where do the unarchived files go? Can I designate a location to unarchive to?

How do I get to a list of the files that have been archived?

If I actually have to perform a full restore of an entire archived file. What is the process for doing that?

Thanks as always for your help. This discussion function really works

Have a spectacular day?

Jim

1. Riight click (Control>Click) on the archive and go to the name of the archive then navigate to the file you need and click on it.

2. If you open the archive.zip it all gets uncompressed to the original state they were in when archived, and to the same location as the archive. I don't know of any way to change the location.

3. See 1. above.

4. Depends on what you have archived and what state the files are in the original.

When you control click in the list of files/actions you will see the name archive.zip or if it was a folder, foldername.zip. Pull the cursor down to it and another menu will appear, move the cursor on to the actual file (two invisibles will be listed here) and you will get a list of the archive contents. Click on the file you want to remove and it will get expanded.

If I understand this correctly, it is just what I'm looking for. However, I must be missing something because when I control-click on the icon of a .zip file in any Finder view, the contextual menu that pops up lacks a named .zip entry except for the "copy xxx.zip" one, which does nothing beyond copying that text to the clipboard.

Could you be more specific about where this list of files is (& what list of actions you are talking about) that produces this menu with the submenu options you describe?

Thanks!
