Hi. My friend has an iMac G5. She forgot the master password to her computer. We tried to reset it using install disc #1 to get to utilities and change the password. However, it didn't get us there. Now when you turn the computer on it asks you to login and it needs the master password. HELP! I'm hoping someone can direct me.

Power Mac G5, Mac OS X (10.5.2)

Hi! Using the install disc is the only way to get there. Tom

    This may work:

How to reset the Master Password (Tiger)

    1. Log in to the admin account.

    2. Open Terminal (Utilities folder).

    3. At the prompt enter the following line and press return:

    sudo rm /Library/Keychains/FileVaultMaster.keychain
    Press RETURN

    4. When prompted for your password enter your admin password. It will not be echoed.

    5. In Security preference pane set a new master password.

    6. Log in to each account that has File Vault turned on and use Accounts preference pane to reset the password for each account.

If you cannot log into an admin account then you could try booting the computer into single-user mode. Once at the prompt do the following:

    /sbin/mount -uw /
    rm /Library/Keychains/FileVaultMaster.keychain
    reboot
Press RETURN at the end of each command line

I suggest you write the above down before proceeding.

Hi! Thanks for your help. The problem is, we can't even log into the computer at all. Any thoughts?

I assume that means there is an Open Firmware password implemented. Basically you are out of luck. I don't think there is a way around the OF password besides reformatting the hard drive.

    Like Tom said already...

Boot from your install disc, enter your language, look for Menubar>Change Password.

Yikes! Now I can log in to the computer, but just realized we don't know the file vault password. Can this be re-set? Our goal is to prevent someone else from playing these password games again. (Long story.) Any help about re-setting the file vault password would be appreciated.

Follow the procedure I already outlined. You can do the steps from the Terminal.

How to reset the Master Password (Tiger)

    1. Log in to the admin account.

    2. Open Terminal (Utilities folder).

    3. At the prompt enter the following line and press return:

    sudo rm /Library/Keychains/FileVaultMaster.keychain

    4. When prompted for your password enter your admin password. It will not be echoed.

    5. In Security preference pane set a new master password.

    6. Log in to each account that has File Vault turned on and use Accounts preference pane to reset the password for each account.
