converting 23.976 ProRes to PAL 25fps.

I need to convert some 23.98HD ProRes to PAL SD.

I tried using Graeme Nattress' conversion software, but I find that there is a slight stutter where his software creates an extra frame - the 25th frame. He advised me to use Cinema Tools to create a file which runs 4% faster via the "conform" option.

However, I have no idea how to do this and can't find anything helpful in the manual.

Can anyone give me guidance, some sort of workflow or a page in the manual - in short, anything to assist me?

Was Graeme thinking of (you) opening your 23.98 clip in CT and using the Conform feature to conform out to 25fps?

Unless I'm mistaken this simply duplicates the 24th frame as the 25th though, so I'm not sure if this will be better than what you have now...

I'm not sure what he meant, and will check back with him, but I understood from him that this Cinema Tools would speed the film up by 4% and therefore eliminate the need to create a 25th double frame.

OK, I tested a 23.98 test clip and conforming it to 25fps in CT does indeed simply speed it up by 4%. The clip plays at 25fps, even though the timecode stays - as the manual (pg 25) indicates - at 24fps.

Thanks very much for the response and for testing.

So, once I have conformed and it is 25fps, then I convert to PAL, right?

But won't the conversion to PAL, either through FCP or through Nattress Conversion add the 25th double frame, or maybe there's an option for fixing that.

The conform to 25fps, as best I can tell, only means that it plays the 24fps as 25 fps. There is no frame doubling (I happened to test with an existing clip which had timecode burn-in and I stepped through it and didn't see a duplicate).

Once that conform is done, yes, you should be able to downconvert to SD PAL frame size. I'm guessing using Compressor or FCP?
