Podcasts "missing" from iTunes

I have the exact same problem, and I'm also on Vista. I'm glad I'm not the only one. It's very annoying, and it only seems to happen with podcasts. I'm using iTunes 7.6.2.9 and Vista with SP1.

Did you find a resolution yet?

What on earth is going on with this?? I am having the xact same problem - totally annoying. Itunes will not even allow me to download the latest podcast again after it decides to get rid of it!

This is what happens to me... I download a podcast and it gets marked as new. If I dont listen to it on the ipod something strange happens when I go to plug it back in to the computer. Itunes will automatically try to sync the ipod and immediately tells me that the podcast I had already transfered to the ipod is now missing for no apparent reason and therefore cannot be synced (its nowhere on the hard drive did itunes delete a brand new podcast?), if I add any new podcasts, then the "missing" podcast will be taken from my ipod the next time I sync. This has happened for the last two years I've had the ipod, I thought the first couple of times was just a glitch, but now I know it's something that itunes really needs to fix, hence the name 'angryipodder'. Bout ready to throw this crap in the trash (two years for christ's sake!).

I have exactly the same problem as all of you! I thought this was an isolated incident, that it was my fault or something, but it looks like this is a Vista iTunes problem. Basically, it *****.

Can someone please answer this!?

I've been having the same problem. I think what happens is that the download has an error of some kind and stops comming in but Itunes thinks that it has been downloaded. I have been able to prevent this sometimes if you keep the download screen up all the time and if a podcast errors out you can hit refresh and it will restart. But if you click "podcasts" or some other screen the error information is gone and you can't refresh it. I can't believe they havn't fixed this yet. Now I have to go back and pick up all my missing podcasts by hand, what a pain.

I've been having the same problems with Windows XP.

Normally I have my podcasts download to an external drive (J:) But sometimes my podcasts suddenly start being downloaded to my My Documents folder (C:\Documents and Settings\richiew\My Documents\My Music\iTunes\iTunes Music).

I am having the same problem in both XP and Vista when I try to drag some podcasts over to a SD card the odd one or two will get the error message "file not available". I thought it was a DRM thing but not now.

I figured out part of the problem. If I forget to power on my external drive, and I start up iTunes and iTunes starts downloading a podcast, it can't download to my typical J: drive since it's not on. iTunes instead creates a new default download location on my local drive.

Solution: Turn off the automatic podcast download option, and don't manually start any new downloads unless the external drive is connected and turned on.

My external drive is off so that isn't the problem. I have had this problem for several months so I think it has to do with itunes updates. sporatically some of the podcasts are missing. I can't redownload them after I delete the missing one because itunes thinks I have heard it and deleted it. I am on Vista. It is VERY annoying.

I've been going through this too.

I just finished downloading a bunch of video podcasts, "Yellowstine InDepth." They're playing for now, but for the heck of it, I right clicked on the podcast and scrolled down to "Locate in Finder." These podcasts are not in a Podcasts subfolder called "Yellowstone Indepth," they're located in a folder called "Downloads" which is located in my regular music directory (between the artists Down and Dozer). The subfolder Dowloads contains only 1 folder called "Podcasts" and the Podcasts folder contains a different folder with the name of each video podcast I've downloaded. In each of those folders there's a file called "download.m4v".

My guess is that when the podcasts are downloaded, somehow iTunes is not finished permanently copying them into they're proper place in the Podcasts folder.

And YES, it's VERY annoying.

This is driving me crazy and it seems to have no rhyme or reason. Anyone know what is up with this?

i was having that exact same problem on my Mac, and was able to fix the problem by fixing the read/write permissions on my Podcast directory. Turns out I didn't have permission to read/write to that directory.

FYI - you can re-download a "lost" podcast by unsubscribing, then resubscribing to that podcast (using "Unsubscribe" buttons), and then click refresh. Then iTunes will go out and download anything you're missing.

As for the bigger problem her-- sorry, no clue.

Yeah, I've been having this problem for an unacceptably long amount of time. It's not a Vista problem, as I've had this problem on both XP and Vista since at least 2006 (when I first got my iPod). It's also not an iPod specific problem, as it happened with my 2nd gen Nano, and also my new Classic 80GB. It is EXTREMELY frustrating. What's worse is, the files are still ON my iPod. I can disconnect, and play them just fine through the iPod, just not on iTunes.

rickhuizinga at that link has a logical sounding reason of why it happens, but that doesn't explain why this hasn't been fixed yet.
