Canadian multilingual keyboard and Terminal

I have a question. I live in Québec province in Canada and I have a MacBook with a Canadian Multilingual keyboard. I'm a big Linux/UNIX user and I use terminal a lot. To make these characters: |{}[]~, that are used a lot in terminals, I need the option key. BUT, I also need the PC Alt key for a lot of terminal applications. There is an option in the Terminal application provided with Mac OS to map the option key as the meta key. But if I do so, I cannot make anymore all the characters I gave that I also need. How can I get both behaviour in an easy way, so I can make those characters but use the meta function in my terminal applications (that includes SSHing into some UNIX/Linux servers and also using all those characters/meta functions)?

Thanks

MacBook, Mac OS X (10.5.2), Core 2 Duo, 2.1 GHz, 1Gb RAM
