Can't send/receive email--"Server cannot be contacted on Port xxx"

Hi,

For the past two days, I've been unable to send and receive email on my iMac. I keep getting the following errors:

"The server cannot be contacted on Port 993" (for my mac.com email addresses)

"The server cannot be contacted on Port 995" (or 110) (for my earthlink email addresses)

Everything seems fine on my iBook, so I don't know what's going on. My iMac is running Leopard and my iBook is running Tiger. I don't know if that has anything to do with it. Also, my iMac is running horrendously slow as far as the Internet connections go.

Can anyone help me figure out how to fix this?

Thanks,

Karin

OK, I played around with my settings and got Apple Mail to work again, but it (and the Internet connection) is still very slow. I keep reading about how changing your DNS number in the Network settings to open DNS servers can speed things up, but: 1) I can't figure out what my DNS number is (I have Earthlink and I checked the site and cannot find much information on it, and 2) How do you make this change. It looks to me that the DNS server box has grayed out text in it which I cannot change.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have the same problem with my .Mac account and can't figure out the solution. I, too, have an iBook running Tiger with no problems, while my newer, more powerful iMac is having these server connection problems ever since upgrading to Leopard. Web pages won't load ("cannot contact the server...") and outgoing email often does not work ("server cannot be contacted on port 993"). Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hello,

Port 993 is for use with an Incoming Server, and not Outgoing Servers. Is the smtp.mac.com actually setup to use 993? If so, this is the problem with sending. Should be using Port 587, most likely. Check and change if needed in Mail Preferences/Accounts/Account Information by clicking on the up/down arrows beside the name of the Outgoing server, choosing Edit Server List and then navigating to the Advanced Tab of that window.

More info, please.

Has anyone gotten this error message (minus my email address of course)?

"Some actions taken while the account “mikeyfranco1@mac.com” was offline could not be completed online. Mail has undone actions on some messages so that you can redo the actions while online.
Additional information: Operation could not be completed. (MFMessageErrorDomain error 1028.)"

I cannot send, receive anything. ANY ideas?

I keep receiving exactly the same error message, with the additional message:
The connection to the server "mail.mac.com" on port 143 timed out.

One mail I drafted while on the train this morning is now copied 17 times in the draft folder....

Mail's connection doctor is showing a green light for this account, but the message has been "Logging on to account..." for 30 minutes now.

I'm equally interested in a solution - I have no idea myself.

I fixed this on my ibook. here's how:

When creating the account, uncheck the 'create automatically' box, because it puts mac.com into everything instead of me.com BUT it sets the ports to the me.com port: 993 and not the mac.com port: 587 so it will never work.

If you turn of the Automatic account creation, then you can manually enter your server info.

Set the incoming server to mail.me.com port 993 and ssl
Set the outgoing server to smtp.mac.com port 587 and ssl

You should be right as rain from there. (^_^)b

I have an established .mac account that I've been using for years. Since MobileMe, I periodically get the same timeout error of port 143 that was mentioned above. While I've been able to change the SMTP address to outgoing.me.com and port 587 as suggested, I can't seem to change the incoming mail address. Whenever I change the name from incoming.mac.com to incoming.me.com and check off SSL (which changes the port from 143 to 993) and save the configuration, it just reverts back to the mac.com address. Very irritating. And creating a new account is out of the question as it will delete all of my existing saved messages.
