Hi. Whenever I try to go to Hotmail through Safari it just tries and tries and never opens. It kind of "cycles" the address thats in the address bar back and forth going nowhere. All other websites are fine and Firefox works good with Hotmail. Any clues?
This has happened to me as well after I have navigated away from the a previously logged in hotmail session and then, after some time, using the same Safari window to go back into hotmail. Hotmail tries to re-authenticate by asking for my password and then "cycles" the address thats in the address bar
I find that if I sign off hotmail when leaving my mail I don't get this problem. To workaround the issue once encountered though I suggest restarting or resetting safari.
Even i have the same kind of problem for all secure websites on safari. I had a word with apple support but they could not do any thing. I did contacted my ISP and they told me to use "traceroute" the websites (Application > utility > network utilities) and send them the details after the action has been done. It could be due to some port settings on the ISP end and not on the mac.
Nice, terse answer, Graham. Should I eat my cookies? Toss my cookies?
What he means is go to Safari menu > Preferences > Security tab, click Show Cookies, search for hotmail, and Remove those cookies. (Or if you don't mind impacting other sites, Safari menu > Reset Safari, check Remove all Cookies, which will do just that).
Same thing happened with me for 2 days in a row. FireFox worked, Safari would get stuck in an endless loop so it would never load sign in Hotmail page. Reset Safari and it now works.
I am having a similar problem with a favorite (as in one I visit often not one bookmarked) website I visit. No Mac browser I have can login to the site, Safari/Firefox/Camino all start to logon then go into an endless loop. This all started after the last Apple update for me.
I had the problem with safari. Couldn't open hotmail or sympatico mail. So I cleared the cookies. It worked, but then I had to clear the cookies almost every time I opened the email. That worked for about a week. Then no matter how much I cleared the cookies, the email still wouldn't open. So I downloaded firefox and used that for opening email. That also had the redirect loop problem, but I could clear the cookies and it worked okay.
That has worked for the last few weeks until today. No matter how many times I clear the cookies on Firefox the hotmail and sympatico sign in pages won't open to my email.
So now both Safari and Firefox won't open my email.
When browsers act weird, it's time for a good disk utility. Use Onyx. It's FREE and available for download here:
http://www.titanium.free.fr/pgs2/english/download.html That is the application for Leopard. Download and install Onyx. Run the Maintenance and Cleaning Scripts.
Also, run Disk Utility and Repair Disk Permissions. (Applications/Utilities)
I don´t think that Safari is the problem. Hotmail has a bad reputation, because they don´t care about so much about technical standards. Maybe you can change the browser while using hotmail.Hotmail is working with Firefox and I don´t think that there will be Problems with Camino as well.
it seems to be working fine for me, Im now using 3.2.1 and clicking the mail button on messenger for mac sends me there no problem. However it doesnt work for Amsn, but ive noticed that the mail button on amsn sends you to a different link so that may well be the problem.
Another small issue, when i get into my mailbox, i have about 5 seconds to read anything before an advert for perfumegirls.co.uk comes up and screws up my inbox, i cant refresh the page or get rid of the advert, it just takes me straight away to a blank page with this small advert, and i have to put in hotmail in the address bar again and have another go at trying to read my emails!
