.ds_store

For some reason I can't get rid of this file called .ds_store I try to move it to the trash bin & it reappears. In some files it says I don't have sufficient privlidges to remove it. In other files it states "Cannot be moved". What is this? And why can't I remove it? It doesn't appear to bother the system it just seems to clutter up the desktop & certain files & looks a little unorganized just sitting there.

(Is there a reason you need to show invisible files?)

This file in created by the Finder to keep track of folder view options, icon positions, and other visual information about folders. A separate .DS_Store file is created in each directory to store information about that directory, so you'll find them appearing all over the directory tree, in pretty much every folder you've visited with the OS X Finder.

It's just one file right?

You can open any folder and don't see anymore .ds_store files?

Because there is software that "turns on" invisible files and it does them all at once usually, these .ds_store files are needed by Mac OS X.

If you didn't use software to "turn on invisible files" and there are no others, then what I suspect is the bit responsible for turning it on somehow got turned on.

Where did you first see it? On the desktop? Then it most likely belongs there. (the desktop is a folder BTW)

If you dragged it out from somewhere else, then this could be a problem. Return it to where it came from if there isn't one there.

I think your solution would be download OnyX and turn on then off invisible items. (OnyX>finder>Show hidden files and folders)

Then run OnyX>Automation>Reset>Display of Folders content which should delete all .ds_store files, you then reboot and they are all rebuilt.

Always backup your data first before doing anything naturally.

you can find OnyX by searching Macupdate or Versiontracker.com

Good to hear!

I think the best AV solution at the moment is here: http://www.clamxav.com/

For spam, Mail.app has some fairly good features which will enable you to filter out a lot of unwanted mail. Otherwise, try to use an ISP with robust spam-blocking (SpamAssassin, etc.). A .Mac account or another type of account that offers you multiple aliases which can help you control who gets which email address of yours is useful, as well.

Good luck.

I had the opportunity to demo Mailsmith, it's really a powerful Mail program that is excellent at knocking down spam.

In fact I always have to continue to train Apple's Junk Mail filter, but Mailsmith I just ran about 200 previous junk mails through it and it was like I didn't have to do anything anymore.

Plus with Mailsmith you can set emails as Not Junk better than Apple's Mail program and incorporate PGP encryption, mass mail etc.

Of course it costs money, but it's a professional level program. If you don't want to be hassled with spam, this program should't disappoint you.
