Time Machine and Thunderbird

Hello,
Thunderbird is storing all the mails in single file databases (my mail files are several Gb large). Obviously Time Machine is backing up these mail file as soon as you receive a single email and this results into huge backup space waste.

In the future I will exclude the Thunderbird email folders from Time Machine in order to save space.

Is there an way to instruct Time Machine to backup mail files only periodically (say once a month or once a week)

Cheers
Luca

I have the exact same problem. I have 10 years of emails that account for 12 Gigabytes of Hard Disk space. I created subfolders and divided my emails by year and it doesn't solve the problem. Time Machine is always backing up these big files, every hour. This eats my bandwidth and is eating the Time Capsule's available disk space.
It seems I will have to exclude this folder in Time Machine settings until someone comes up with a solution. In the meantime a manual old fashion backup every week will have to suffice.
