Tip: The table of contents is empty because none of the paragraph styles...

If you get "The table of contents is empty because none of the paragraph styles selected in the Document Inspector are used in the document.", be sure that your TOC is inserted BEFORE the headings you want complied in the TOC.

Pages' TOC logic only looks forward/down the document from the point of TOC insertion.

Mac OS X (10.4.10)

Thanks for taking the time to leave a tip. That's very considerate of you. This issue has been covered a few times over the past several months, but it never hurts to remind people again. The solution I generally offer is simply to put your cursor at the beginning of the document because of the reason you cited: the ToC function only looks forward.
