Communication error on video chats

Hi,

I'm aware this question has been asked many times but I think I've tried all the suggestions in other threads.

I'm getting a -8 error in iChat on Mac OS 10.4.11, trying to chat to someone using the same version. We're both using AIM accounts. I'm behind a Billion 7401VGPM ADSL modem/router; the person on the other end is using an Airport Extreme base station, connected to a cable modem.

Presumably the problem is at my end, since the Airport base station should be ready to go out of the box.

I have UPnP enabled on my router and the only port forwarding I'm using is for AFP (548 and 427). The firewall is disabled on my router, my Mac, and the Mac at the other end. My router is VoIP ready but I have SIP disabled on it in the VoIP settings. I've also tried using telnet to unbind the SIP port following the instructions on page 4a but I got an unknown command error. I've also contacted my ISP and they confirmed that they do not block port 5060.

I've tried the Contact Testers; both myself and the person at the other end can initiate a video chat with appleu3test01, yet we can't initiate a chat with each other. As usual text chat works fine.

I'd appreciate any help anyone can offer. I've included an error log below.

Thanks very much,

Tom

It's a standard Optus cable modem and as far as I know it is not configurable. I don't know if it's routing, but I'm sure it IS doing DHCP because if you only connect one computer to it, it gives it an IP address using DHCP. Do I need to set up the network without using DHCP on the Airport Extreme? If so, how do I do that?

I'll check on the NAT-PMP (not sure what that is). Should it be on or off?

Thanks a lot.

Hi,

Often a cable modem will be in Bridge mode.
This will mean that it will pass the Public IP you get from your ISP - which is most likely a DHCP one - straight on to your computer if it is the only device.

The way to tell is what the actual IP is when you do this.
Going here will tell you your Public IP http://myip.dk/
If this shows on your computer when connected directly then it in Bridge mode and is not routing.

Domestic device uses three predetermined groups of IP addresses
192.168.xxx.xxx
10.xxx.xxx.xxx
172.16.xxx.xxx through to 172.32.xxx.xxx

In the Airport the NAT-PMP should be on. It is a similar thing to UPnP or other devices.

Hi,

I am getting the same error message "error -8" but both I and the people I am trying to chat with (two using .mac accounts and one using an AIM account) have until about a week ago been able to video chat no problem.

None of us are really "computer people" and I am sure no settings were changed by any of us, any ideas what we should do?

My understanding is that nothing extra needs to be done.

Airport devices do NAT routing a bit different from other devices and pass data to computers based on their IP address (and the ports involved) on a sort of "On-the-Fly" manner.

Apple's NAT-PMP is similar to UPnP

Really appreciate the help on this.

So that application basically allows me to manually open ports via UPnP or NAT-PMP? But in that case each port will only lead to one computer (i.e. the one that is running Port Map) so that won't help in the situation where more than one user on the network has an iChat account.

Thanks again for your help and time.

Hi,

My understanding is that this app/utility makes UPnP or NAT-PMP work for the computer it is on.
I am not aware that it blocks other computers like setting Port Forwarding in the actual modem (if it routes) or a router would.

The first person who came across this and told me about it seemed to be able to type very fast and may have set up the port Manually whilst we were communicating in a Text chat. (It may also have been that the Utility was able to pull the ports it needed.)

This first person was using a modem and an Airport device.
A second got it to work with a Thomson-Alcatel Speedtouch 780 which are notoriously difficult to get to work with iChat (or at least since their Version 5 firmware)

I hope this helps.

I'm starting to think the problem may be with my computer (not network). I'm now having problems using iChat from my work network, and other people can use it fine to conference with the person I'm trying to talk to. Also, that person has had successful video chats with other people.

I'm using iChat 3.1.9 on Mac OS X 10.4.11. The Mac firewall is turned off. Are there any other settings I could fiddle with?

Thanks.
