I want to backup my Vista 64 partition so that I can try an XP install to see if I can improve the performance of a game - Crysis. Can I use Disk Utility in OSX to image and restore (once tested) the Windows partition?
Disk Utility can read from NTFS drives, but can not write to it.
And since Vista exclusively uses NTFS for its system drive, you would be stucked at restore.
Using DU you can create an image of Vista volume. With Mac OSX using a file system driver that supports Win NTFS read/write (e.g. Paragon/Macfuse) will allow you to write the files from image.
In Vista Ultumate, Start->Programs->Maintenance->Backup and Restore Center will create full disk Bkup. I've used it against C:\Vista U. 32 & D:\Vista U. 64 writing to usb external disk. Restore is done from Vista install / update DVD which reinstalls both OS's in about 40 minutes.
