deleting Windows Media Player for Mac

Hi,

I downloaded Windows Media Player for Mac from the Microsoft website. I decided to delete it because it was always quiting itself (I knew there was a reason I switched from PC to Mac).

I went to put the program and all its files into the trash, but when I tried to delete them, the trash said the process could not be done because several files were "locked". How do I unlock these files so that I can get them off my computer?

I heard from the Microsoft website that pressing Alt while deleting the files would do the trick, but it's not working for me.

Thanks.

Hi Caleb,
The trouble lies within the .lproj language folders whose files must be unlocked before trashing. There may be a short way (which I have not personally tried), namely:
0. "Get Info" for Windows Media Player.app, and remove the various languages in the Languages box. Then trash.

If this does not work, or if you choose not to try it, you may proceed as follows (this worked for me):
1. Take WMP out of the trash, and double click the folder.
2. Choose the Windows Media Player.app, and while pressing the r.h.s. of your mouse, choose "Show Package Contents" from the window opened.
3. Double click the Contents folder.
4. Double click the "Resources" folder, and look for the various .lproj language folders.
5. From this point follow the instructions of Bryan Reid, see
Bryan Reid, "Cannot Unlock Package Contents" #1, 01:30pm Sep 9, 2005 CDT
6. Repeat for each language separately.
7. Good luck, and let us know.

Hi Pink Panther,

I just tried it again. It works for me. Files gone instantaneously without a bother.

I think this happens because WMP somehow 'hides' its inner unlocked files while sending a false message that everything is completely unlocked

Well, when I go to empty the Trash without using the Option key, I do get the message that file "x" is locked ad nauseum, so it would appear that the Finder is seeing all the locked files. Using the Option Empty Trash method, the files just disappear.

FWIW, I do believe you when you say it doesn't work for you. I don't have any good ideas on why it works for one but not the other.

I guess the real reason for my post was that the OP stated they were new to Macs. I was surprised that no one had even mentioned the simpler method. I hope the OP is still reading and knows that there is a simpler way that works most of the time.

hey buddy,

On some systems that have been upgraded to Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger), Media Player won't launch,it quits immediately.

Here's the fix:

((Locate the file "Windows Media Player Prefs" from the Preferences folder in the Library folder in your Home folder, and drag it to the trash))

Delete that file and launch the Media Player.

i hope it will help every mac user,Good Luck.
