i'm getting small purple squares on my pictures when i start to edit them.

I have this same problem with my G5 imac isight. I recently had the logic board replaced and I don't remember this happening with the old one (before it went out)

I hope that someone out there knows what is causing this.

This is a screenshot of my iphoto problem .... it doesn't happen on every image, but on some images you can see this distortion very lightly when you increase the size with the slider. The coloring doesn't occur until one of the editing sliders is moved.

Start with the basics:

Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the apple and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild.

Start with the troubleshooting basics:

1. Repair Permissions using Disk Utility

2. Delete the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder. You'll need to reset your User options afterwards.

3. Create a new account (systempreferences -> accounts) and see if the problem is repeated there. If it is, then a re-install of the app might be indicated. If it's not, then it's likely the app is okay and the problem is something in the main account.

I went through and tried each of the suggestions that you made in the order that you made them and the problem still exists.

I have another screenshot of a picture before editing. As you may be able to see, the "texturing" of the image is present, it doesn't take on the purple color until one of the editing sliders is moved.





I have the Google Picasa uploader plugin installed. I'm going to try to uninstall that to see if it does anything.
I'll let you know what happens.

When you created a new account, did you make a new library there and import some pics to it? Test edited some of them?

Yes, that's what I did and the problem was still there. I only imported from my existing library though. Today I will download some new images from my camera.

Also, uninstalling the plugin did nothing.

If the problem is repeated with the new pics in the new library, my next move would be to re-install iPhoto.

To do this:

Trash the app from your Applications Folder
Trash any pkg files in HD/ Library / Receipts with iPhoto in the name

Then re-install.

I did delete then reinstall per your narrative to no avail.

I had a thought that maybe the problem was my new camera, but the effect is present in all of the images regardless of the camera used.

Could a bad logic board or video card cause this to happen?

It may well be a hardware issue. The only thing I can think of otherwise is to re-install the entire OS in case some back ground library has been damaged.

Any messages in the Console?

What messages should I look for in Console?

I may be forced to do an 'Archive and Install" to see if it clears up. I've never done this procedure before. Will I lose all of my current settings/passwords/preferences/etc .... ?

Anything mentioning iPhoto, really...

The point of the A&I install is that these things should be preserved. However, best to post on the 10.4 forum for help on that. It's a bit rusty to me, I'm afraid.

After many different methods of attempting to isolate this problem as a software related, I got around to running the Apple Hardware Test and, unfortunately, the result was an error code involving my video card. A call to Apple Care revealed that my logic board is bad (this is the 4th one)
