Uninstalling Zinio Reader

Zinio Reader comes with the Tiger install, but I'm not interested in using it. I trashed the app folder, removed the startup item from my startup apps list, went through and trashed all the prefs and other files as suggested by the Zinio web site. Spotlight shows nothing named Zinio on my computer. But the subscription monitor just keeps coming up and checking for subscriptions, of which I have none! It somehow interferes with my printer - if it comes up while I'm printing, it stops all jobs and I have to start over. Why is this ghost still lingering, and how do I make it just GO AWAY! No response from Zinio tech support!

Did you also empty the trash? It's possible that the delivery manager is running from the trash; OS X doesn't enforce such things as well as OS 9 did.

Also, check for items in the /Library/StartupItems or /System/Library/StartupItems folder (if the folder exists; it may not).

If you want to see where things are likely installed, grab a copy of Pacifist, find the installer on the Tiger DVD containing the Zinio Reader installer, and open it in Pacifist. It will not show you any files installed by scripts embedded in the installer bundle, but hopefully there aren't any.

Thank you for your response, however the problem continues - I did empty my trash AND restart. There were some startup items folders in my old system folder, but no Zinio in there, in fact nothing named Zinio on my computer at all! I downloaded Pacifist, but looking through the various packages I couldn't find a Zinio installer, nor could I find one running a Finder Search for Zinio on the install disk. Still no response from Zinio after two support requests. If you have any influence with Apple, please suggest they no longer include this hellish program with Tiger! Do you have any other suggestions? I can't be the only one with this problem, but I find no other entries on the support forums.

Thank you for your response. Those are the instructions from the Zinio web site, which I followed exactly. All those things are gone, the trash is emptied, and I restarted. The subscription monitor STILL keeps going, and going, and going! That's why this problem is so aggravating - by rights there's no way it should still be happening! Any other suggestions?

BTW, when you say that it came with Tiger, was it on a retail disc or on the iMac's Restore disc? I looked on my Tiger retail install DVD and didn't find it.

The reason I need it is that I had to perform an Archive and Install of Tiger to eliminate some kernel panic issues after the QuickTime 7.0.1 update and, in the process, somehow messed up the Zinio authorization. I didn't re-authorize prior to upgrading to Zinio 2.0, and I can't get 2.0 to authorize. The delivery manager crashes after submitting the e-mail address and password and I didn't keep a copy of the 1.4.6 installer for some unknown reason.

Uninstalling is a manual process with 2.0, just like the older versions.

The next time it happens, you may be able to find the culprit by bringing up Activity Monitor while the window is still open, select "All Processes" (or something like that), and look for anything that might be Zinio-related. I think Activity Monitor will allow you to determine the path to the executable being run in the process so that you can navigate to that path and remove the offending files.

Let us know what you find out after trying this.
