Low power in USB Ports - Canon Scanner

It seems to me that the USB ports on the Mac Mini are under-powered. Perhapse this is by design, due to the size of the unit.

I have a scanner which is USB powered (No option for an external supply, and I wouldn't want one anyway),

If I plug the scanner into the USB port using the very short cord which came with it, it works okay, but If I use a longer 5m cord then the scanning process stops abruptly with an error message, I hear a short sound like the scanner is about to start, but then it stops. I'm sure this is simply because the Mini is not sending enough power down the cord.

The USB chord in question works perfectly with my Canon inkjet printer, but then it is not USB powered.

I really need a longer cord, because it is just not practical for the scanner to be less than a metre away from the Mac Mini (It's a very short cord which came with the scanner).

I guess I'm going to have to fork out for a powered USB hub. Is this a pretty standard thing or is there perhaps something wrong with my mac?

My Mini came with a 85Watt power supply which is quite low and cannot power too many different devices all at once. So I bought a usb hub which is self powered (doesn't draw power from Mini's power supply) and plug in all my non-self powered devices to it so that they draw power from the hub instead of the Mini. It wasn't very expensive and it gives a few extra ports so I would recommend it.
