177 Degrees F... um... WOW.

I am a computer guy to put it lightly, I am a college student that works in IT while going to school studying MIS. I have seen nearly every computer issue at least once, however I have never encountered an issue like this before. Its not really even a problem, yet anyways. My Macbook reached a processor temperature of 177 Degrees Fahrenheit yesterday, while sitting on my cool to the touch desk, in a room that was 65 Degrees in temperature. Fan was going at 6200RPM (as per my smcFanControl setting).

What was I doing? Copying the contents of a DVD to my laptop so I don't need to haul the discs around anymore. I realize its a CPU intensive task, but 177 degrees seems a bit insane. *Is that normal for the Macbook to reach nearly 180?* Like I said, I have used many computers to do similar tasks, and they have never reached such temps before. Heck, in the same circumstances (cool desk, ~65 degree room) my PowerBook G5 is up to 135 degrees F just using FireFox. *Is this a Mac laptop trend? Getting insanely hot?* Seems to me like it could be bad for the components, which is why I am debating selling my 6 month old Macbook and getting a Macbook Pro since I assume they have better cooling with the 2 fans.

This also concerns me becuase summer is getting close, and with 100+ degree days just around the corner, and not always having the AC on, is my laptop going to burst into flames when the room its in is no longer a cool 65, but instead 90 degrees?

I apologize for the confusion 🙂 I guess I am over-protective of my Apple stuff, and would hate for them to die (iPhone is always in its case, iPod Touch is always in a full case, macbook is in a bag or slip-sleeve, same goes for powerbook). I used to freak out when my AMD Athlon desktop got to 135F, and heck under load my Pentium D gaming desktop ran at 45F. But if its normal to be 177+F (a few hours ago I reached 181) then thats fine by me.

I haven't seen that video until now. But I would say that yeah, the iTouch screens are nice, however I only used mine without a case for a few days. I then got a full case that flips down to cover the screen, as well as a protective clear protector for just the screen. Mine is still in perfect condition and I got it in January, with the exception of scratches on the back aluminum part (I think the back of the iTouch should be made from the same material as the iPhone).

Having said that, I am guessing that the iTouch pictured in that video has an invisibleSHIELD protective layer around it ( http://www.invisibleshield.com/ipod/apple/ipod-touch.php), I have not tried to run a razer blade across my iTouch but I am sure that it would scratch without some protection, it is after all just thin glass.
