Green Light but No Internet

I'm trying to get my new Intel iMac to connect wirelessly to my linksys router which is connected to a cable modem and my old flat panel G4. Turned on Airport on the new iMac, selected my network, (router name recognized), entered my router password, and all I get is a green light in Network Prefs indicating Airport is good, but I have no internet connection - (safari, mail, nothing). Currently: In Network Prefs "Self-Assigned IP", Using DHCP, IPv4 Address good, nothing indicated next to "Router", added my MAC address on router's set up page, and tried manually configuring (IP Address, Subnet Mask, etc), in network preferences - still no internet!!! Router and G4 on second floor of house, Intel iMac on first floor approx 20' west of router. All lights on modem and router are good, and internet connection on G4 working fine. What am I doing wrong?

Okay, I've gotten the hardwired G4 back online (disconnected everything, reset router, reconfigured/encrypted router, reconnected everything and bingo - G4 can connect to internet!)

Still no wireless connection with the Intel iMac. After searching endlessly on the internet for solutions, here's what I've tried so far: Restarted iMac-still no internet, Renewed DHCP lease countless times, configured Network (TCP/IP) manually using info from hardwired iMac, (with the exception of the IP Address - used next sequential number for last three digits), Deleted associated .plst's, put a "$" in front of router password, (odd, but worked for others, not me!), deleted Network and Created new one, used "sudo ipconfig" command in Terminal, and still nothing. The darn thing is able to connect to the network but never to the internet. Each time by the way, I get the message: "Airport has a Self Assigned IP address and may not be able to connect to the Internet" (DUH!) But when I manually configured the IP I still could not connect the the internet, but was connected to the Network, well, Router.

As for the Router, I've changed the SSID, disabled SSID broadcasting, set up a WEP password, cloned my MAC address, entered MAC address of wireless iMac, changed the Router's IP, and I think that's it...

I am sooooo frustrated at this point! What am I missing?

Wow, Violet, I am having the identical problem

New iMac 3.06 gHz, 4 mb RAM, 10.5.2.
I have several Macs at home on a wired and wireless network.
The new iMac connects with the network, as other computers' files can be transferred via 'drop box.'
No internet connectivity with the iMac. All other computers on the network connect well.
Status: "Connected" "Built-in Ethernet has a self-assigned IP address and may not be able to connect."

Have tried multiple restarts, resetting the modem/router, reset PRAM, reinstalling a clean version of the OS, renew DHCP lease multiple times, manually configuring... just about everything I can think of.

Can anyone help here?

Kurt

Holy Shirts and Pants! This worked!!! Thank you Lenn! But now, does this mean that my router is no longer secure? (Disabled Wireless Security in router config page in order to get my wireless on the internet.) Or does this mean that if someone by some chance figures out what the name of my router is they will then be able to hop on my network and connect to the internet sans password? Is there anything else I should do as far as security?

Well, a big Woo Hoo, anyway. Thanks again.
