Font handling on the mac is atrocious, it's been atrocious since Panther and probably before, and it's not likely to improve because gamers and iGadget'ers (Apple's new primary focus) don't use or care about fonts (which is why you'll get inane replies like "Use less fonts!"). Having so many active fonts also slows down your entire system, especially during bootup. I have about half what you have and if I leave them active my computer takes twenty minutes to boot as ATS (apple type server) runs through all the fonts. I've found certain webpages problematic as well as the adobe pdf plugin will also take twenty minutes as ATF runs through all the fonts. Running several utilities to fix various problems never improved performance, so I just finally bought the bullet and used fontbook to turn off all the fonts in my users folder until I need them. Then I'll turn them on while using Photoshop or illustrator or InDesign or whatever program needs the fonts, then turn them back off afterward. Yes it's a pain, and takes at least 15 minutes each time, but it makes booting and everything else a lot quicker, although fontbook or the OS itself or Fontbook has a way of turning those fonts back on more often than should happen by itself.
Part of superb Mac OSX font handling. Amiga font handling in '86 was better, and I HAD adobe postscript support to my postscript equipped laserjet 4P.
But like Apple says "Use less fonts!" Or ELSE. The heyday of Desktop Publishing was a long time ago (so they've decided.)
