Creating new iphoto library

My hard drive is near full and I have to clear off some of the info. I would like to transfer my current iPhoto library to external hard drive and start new library on computer. Is there a way to do this and easily access my files from my external drive using iPhoto program/alternate between libraries? iPhoto is '08. Any help appreciated. Thanks.

Welcome to the Apple Discussions.

To move your Library:

1. Quit iPhoto

2. Copy the iPhoto Library Folder as an entity from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.

3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.

4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

To create a new library:

Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting dialogue choose ' Create Library'.

To Switch between Libraries: the same option (or alt) key on launch trick

iPhoto Library Manager will greatly assist in working with more than one Library - including which to open, movig files. albums, events between them etc.
