Unable to hear audio cd when using OS 9.2?

My computer is partitioned into 3 parts, part for OS X.4, part using OS 9.2 for art stuff, and a separate disc for OS 9.2 for music. This was done because when I bought Cubasis it wasn't compatible with OS X and I had a separate disc because of constant freezing of the computer when recording my music. I haven't recorded music for some time, a few years, but today I tried again and found that whilst I could record properly I couldn't hear the music when I played it back. After making sure everything was switched on that I could think of, I than tried an audio CD and couldn't hear that either - I couldn't hear it in the other part of my computer that is OS 9.2 but the CD played perfectly in iTunes in OS X.4. So my speakers are fine and connected and I also did the test on them in the OS 9.2 disc. Can anyone help?

Thank you for your reply, I did what you suggested but whilst I can hear audio now in the OS9.2 section of my computer I am still not able to hear audio when I record. I think I am going to have to reinstall Cubasis and my Midi software and wonder if I can just install on the top of the old programme as I am not sure of how to uninstall and then reinstall. In fact I never did install the programmes originally, the gentleman who installed the audiophile 2496 delta sound card did it for me, he is no longer lives in my town, so I hope some one out there can talk me through reinstalling OMS, Cubasis, Midi and the Audiophile drivers. Thank you. I was also told to throw away all my preferences for OS9.2 part of computer - and there was obviously some corruption as things changed when i did so - but that is why nothing works now.

If you are running Mac OS X, you will not be able to hear the sound input unless you are running a program to +play through+ the sound to the sound output. I'm a bit confused about whether you are using Mac OS 9 or Mac OS X.

If you are using Mac OS 9, in the Sound control panel on the Input tab, there is a check box to +play sound through output device+ and an Options button to select the input source.

If you are using Mac OS X, you have to be running a program that plays through the input sound to the speakers. A sound recording program should have a setting to do so, in preferences or in the menu somewhere. There is also a program that only does this job called LineIn.

Thank you for your reply. I have a dual computer and run OSX 10.4 for normal usage but for recording music I use OS 9.2 on a separate disc within computer. I have a sound card Audiophile 2496 to do this and yes it is selected in my sound manager and also when in the Audio System in Cubasis. Everything records but I can't hear it - I can even export the sound to Sparkle and can open it in Sparkle but still can't hear it. I have tried everything i know to correct this and would be very grateful if you have any other ideas.

So, I just want to confirm that in the Mac OS 9 Sound control panel on the Input tab, the check box for +*play sound through output device*+ is checked -AND- when you click the Options button to the right, you have the correct +Input Source+ selected.

Also, I'm told Cubase is a very complex program. It might have it's own "play through" setting somewhere. If that is turned OFF, it probably overrides the system setting.

Try a very basic program like Coaster. See if it can record and play the sound at the same time.

Coaster's +play through+ setting is right on the main window, if I remember correctly.

Thank you for your reply. I have checked input and output tabs in Sound Manager - ASIO Delta play sound thro device is selected and again in Options in Cubasis ASIO Delta is selected. Very interestingly there is a test song in the Cubasis folder which I also tried to play and there was no sound - this always played before.

I tried to download coaster but my music disc doesn't have Internet Access and so I downloaded it in OS X and burnt it onto a CD and when I opened it in OS (it froze my computer. Obviously didn't like being downloaded in OS X. I have tried to go to the Cubasis site for technical support but sadly my programme isn't mentioned - it is just too old I guess. Cubasis is the basic programme to Cubase which is too technical for me to contemplate. When I record the red button comes on and when I play back the green button comes on which is exactly what it is supposed to do - and I just can't think of anything else that I have missed.

I am happy to tell you that my problem with not hearing the sound when I use my recording equipment has been resolved. With great difficulty I stripped all the music software off the computer, than had the fun and games of reinstalling - and what a job that was as I didn't really have a clue on what I was doing. But thanks to the Audiophile card 2496 manual I was finally able to manage to configure the OMS, the Audiophile card and the Midisport 2x2 and my Yamaha keyboard and Cubasis - but even then I still couldn't hear the sound. Then I noticed that in my sound manager the speakers selected was SPdif delta - I didn't really pay too much attention to this as these speakers were selected when Audiophile Card was installed. But going deep into the Audiophile software or rather looking at the Delta controls I noticed in the harware settings section that 'no SPdif signal was found - so than I took it that was the trouble and in that section I found I could change the default to be analogue speakers RL and the trouble was resolved. Only trouble is I still have conflict as after using Cubasis I found that when I quit the programme everything freezes and I have to restart the system so until I sort that out I can't really say I have fully succeeded. I will now start to find out what that problem is and hopefully all will be overcome. I must say I have learnt an enormous amount about computing during my trials and problems with the lack of sound. thank you Ken once again for your answers and support during this time.
