Iphoto lost my photos

It doesn't open photos in one album saying The volume for “IMG_4341.JPG.jpg” cannot be found., and Insert the disk or connect to the server volume and wait for it to appear on the desktop, then try again about each photo. Do you know how to fix this?

Iphoto lost my photos

To my knoledge iPhoto has NEVER lost a single photo - many people have lost and thrown their photos away and iPhoto has lost contact with photos due to human and/or computer failures, but I have never seen iPhoto lose a photo.

this sounds like you are running iphoto in a referenced mode (the preference to "copy items to the iPhoto library is unchecked) - it this is the case then to view those photos you must have the "disk or server" that they are stored on (you said NOT to copy them and iPhoto followed your directions) connected and available to use

The quick fix is to connect the disk or server that contains your photos - the long term fix is to use a managed library (check the option to "copy items to the iPhoto library") rather than a referenced library -- but converting is not easy

it's strange because I copied all of my albums to Iphoto the same way but it lost only one of them

where did you "copy" them from, how did you "copy them" and where did you "copy them" to?

Did you "copy them" somewhere or did you import them into iPhoto?

Previous question still unanswered - How is your preference to "copy imported items to the iPhoto library" set?

copy items to library - is not checked, should it be?

That is your choice -- when it is not checked you are telling iPhoto NOT to touch your orignial files and that you will totally manage them including making sure that they are available when needed, deleting them after you delete them from iPhoto, etc - you are saying that you want to be totally responsible for the originals files

Most experienced users strongly recommend against this but it is your choice - and most likely what you are seeing is a result of that choice - iPhoto is telling you that the source for the original is not available and that you need to do what you said you would do and make it available.

Most albums I copied from my previous computer, some albums - from Aperture, some from the external drive... I just created albums in Iphoto and copied there photos from wherever and nothing ever happened to them...

Specifically for the photo that iPhoto can not find what is the answer to my questions? What is the source for the photo that iPhoto can not find?

When you copied from Aperture how did you do that?

Are you selecting photos and dragging them to an album in the left hand source pane of iPhoto - are you copying them into a folder inside the iPhoto library (you should never do this) - are you draging them to the iPhoto icon in the Dock -- how are you "copying" them into albums in iPhoto?

I am a little confused now.... So this box wasn't checked, I copied photos into Iphoto all the time and somehow they are all ok, except for one album. I mean, I didn't do anything except copying files importing or dragging, I don't remember) into Iphoto and with this box unchecked they were still all fine... Why?
I checked this box now anyway. So what is the right way to copy photos into Iphoto (not on;y from Aperture, right now I need to copy back that album from the external drive). And also, is there a way to manage import settings (for example, I want to make all files I copy in jpeg smaller)?
And also, I saved Iphoto library to the external drive some time ago, is there a way to copy to my current library some albums from there?

Because the source photos are available I guess - as I have ask a couple of times, where were these photos stored when you imported - and for one (is it an album or a photo?) the source photos are not available

I checked this box now anyway.

This now gives you a mixed library with some photo being referenced (the ones you imported you have the option to copy items un-checked) and all future ones (as long as you leave the option checked) being in your iPhoto library and managed by iPhoto

Before you import anymore photos you should deceide how you want to handle your photos and be consistant - having a mixed library is much more confusing than having a referenced library - and for almost everyone having a manged library is the best

So what is the right way to copy photos into Iphoto (not on;y from Aperture, right now I need to copy back that album from the external drive).

The right way to import photos into iPhoto is to import them - this can be by connecting yoru camera and having iPhoto import directly from it or by dragging the photos onto the iPhoto icon in the dock (or using the file menu ==> import command)

And also, is there a way to manage import settings (for example, I want to make all files I copy in jpeg smaller)?

No - you can modify the photos using an editor (like preview) before you import them - once they are imorted iPhoto will maintain the originals without modification - a major feature of iPhoto

And also, I saved Iphoto library to the external drive some time ago, is there a way to copy to my current library some albums from there?

Probably - but we need to get the nomenclature correct

Photos are stored in events - albums contain pointers to photos in events and folders contain albums

You need to be very specific about whether you are discussing events or albums because things are very different between the two - when you speak of albums I'm not sure you really are talking about iPhoto albums

Actually the weird thing is that that album was imported from the same place as few others that are available, that's why it's strange.
What I want is have all the originals in Iphoto and be managed automatically when I manage albums, I was sure that's how it worked from the beginning...
I mean events - how can I copy one event from Iphoto library on the external drive?
And - why is it wring to drag items into events directly? By the way it doesn't allow me to do this - it creates new event when I try to drag something into some event.

You really need to take the time to learn to use iPhoto

try the getting started section on the Apple Support page - http://www.apple.com/support/iphoto/ - and the getting started manual - http://manuals.info.apple.com/en/iPhoto08_GettingStarted.pdf - and importing photo - http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=61015 - and most of all the iPhoto tutorials - http://www.apple.com/ilife/tutorials/#iphoto

If you take the time to learn how to use iPhoto and use the help system you will find life will be much easier
