Safari & Gmail Chat in Windows

When I access my gmail page in Safari on the Windows Vista OS, I am unable to access gmail chat. I continually receive a message that states "We're experiencing technical difficulties that may prevent your chats from being sent."... and then a countdown timer that tries to reconnect every 90 seconds. However, if I load up IE or FF, it works fine. Any suggestions?
