How to enter username when using SSH with Terminal?

I'm trying to use SSH in Terminal but when I get to the part where I have to login, it only asks for my password & assumes the username on the Mac is also the username for the site. But it's not. How can I tell Terminal (or the remote server) that I want to enter the username as well as the password?

Thanks,
Elllen

V.K.,

Thanks so much for your answer. After trying that, when I entered my password, nothing showed up in Terminal & the server didn't accept that (empty) password. While I didn't expect the password itself to show up, I thought that at least I'd see the cursor move & "*"s or some other character substituting for the characters I entered. Do you know what I can do about that? Thanks again for replying so soon.
