PowerMac keeps shutting down

Hello all! My PowerMac G4 has been shutting down by it's self lately. It's not a proper shut down, it just dies. Last night, the monitor flicked off, then on, then off, then the computer just died. I hit the power button, it starts back up, runs a couple minutes, then dies again. Is the power supply bad? If so, what kind do I need? If not, what is it? Thanks!

DP machines produce a lot of heat, and Mac processors are thermally protected; they shut things down when temps approach a critical failure level. Before ripping out the power supply, do two things:

1) carefully observe how things are arranged around the computer. Most intake air comes in from the bottom of the front panel. Feel under the front panel near the lower "foot" and you'll find a slot about 1/2" wide. Make sure nothing is near the slot and nothing like a loose piece of paper is trying to su ck up into the intake. Heated exhaust air jets out the back; leave at least six inches between the case and any vertical surfaces behind.

2) Make sure the fans are on.

3) Open the case and inspect for an infestation of dust bunnies. Excess build=up of dust/crud on fan blades can even slow fan rotation

Tom & Allen,

Very helpful information guys, thank you! I ran the hardware test, both the short and long versions and the logic board passed both times. Is this pretty trustworthy?

I never even thought about dust build up as I keep a tidy studio. I went ahead and opened the case and gave everything a good vacuum. It was very clean inside, though the fan blades have the typical dust build up on the blades. The heatsink was clean. However, the air intake slot Allen spoke of on the front bottom had a good deal of built up dust. I thoroughly vacuumed both sides and cleared it of any debris.

It's running right now and I'll see how long it goes. Now that I've tested the logic board, cleaned all dust and verified that both fans are running, is it possible the power supply needs replaced? Over the past couple of weeks, I'd use the computer all day or evening, then walk in and it would be off. This happened a couple times. Last night I walked in and it was off, so I turned it back on, the display turned off/on a few times and then the computer turned off. I powered up again and the same happened. Each time I power back up, I get the normal message stating the computer was not properly shut down.

Is this the behavior of a faulting power supply? To act intermittently? I want to be as sure as possible before I shell out $200 for one I dont need. This is, of course, if the cleaning doesn't solve the problem. Thanks guys!
