Unable to play .avi with Cinepak compression with Quicktime

I have multiple short .avi files that were created with a Cinepak compression. Before upgrading to Leopard, I had no problem playing these clips. After upgrading to Leopard, when I tried to view the clips through Quicktime, I receive the error "The movie could not be opened . Operation could not be completed. (OSStatus error -1.)". I was able to view the clips with iMovie '08, but when I tried to compile the movie and send the clips to either a .mov or .avi format from iMovie, I just got a blank screen. I assume that I am missing an important codec. Any suggestions?

After I installed Perian, I was able to view the clips in Quicktime, which is a step in the right direction; thank you. I am still able to view the clips in iMovie and am able to view the entire created movie as long as I am viewing it within iMovie. When I try to export the created movie (either as an .avi or .mov) the resultant movie continues to come out blank.
