All modern monitors are LCD, as in Liquid Crystal Display (vs. the old CRT, Cathode Ray Tubes). However, an LCD does not produce light per-se, so you need something to light it up. In older days, it used Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamps, CCFL's, but modern technology has evolved to a degree that Light Emitting Diodes, LEDs, can now be made that produce enough light to rival or exceed CCFL's, with the advantage of far less energy consumption. All recent 15in MacBook Pros and MacBook Airs come with LED-lit LCDs. However, the standard 17in MBP comes with a 1680 x 1050 CCFL LCD; the high resolution 1920x1200 LED LCD is an extra ($100) custom option, regardless of glossy or matte finish. In other words, you're in luck.
