Full Time Capsule will no longer backup

Today I started getting a message notifying me that my backup to Time Capsule failed because there's insufficient space on the TC. !!! I've been under the apparent misimpression that TC would push the oldest data into data oblivion to make room for more recent data.

What am I supposed to do now? Erase the entire TC drive and start over?

Same problem on my Mac Book. However I have an iMac on the same TC and got the msg but just clicked ok and it pushed back and works fine.

The Mac Book still will not go but it did push back one. There is only one dated back up of the Mac Book on the TC now, go figure!?

Note, the Mac Book was the first to render the message.

Also the TC has 4.3 GB left and the MB requires 9G. The iMac has performed several back-up sessions since the one and only full message.

What's a new Mac user to do? Apple care and tech support time!
