I thought I could use a blank DVD-R disc as backup for data/files, as I've done with blank CD's in the past. However, loading a blank DVD just starts iDVD and I can't figure out how to transfer files, plus there is no disk icon on my desktop. I'm sure this is a real beginner question, but I just got my iMac. Thanks, David
First thing you need to do is change your preferences so that the DVD mounts on the desktop. Open System Preferences by click the Apple menu in the top left corner of your screen and selecting "System Preferences..."
The select the CDs & DVDs pane in System Preferences. You can change the "When you insert a blank DVD" option to "Ask what to do". You can now close System Preferences
The computer will then ask what you would like to do when you insert the blank DVD, selecting "Open Finder" will mount the DVD on the desktop.
Thanks J.C. and Capaho. The pref change process worked and I now see DVD on my desktop. It has unusual suffix of ".fpbf", but I'll do some research on that and hope to now be able to back up routine files/documents on DVD. Not trying to create movies or slide shows at this point. Thanks again for fast/helpful responses. Sincerely, David
