Are you running any of Symantec's (Norton) or McAfee's Internet security products or anything similar, or an antivirus/antispyware application? Most occurrences of this type of problem stem from such utilities that tend to treat an upgrade to iTunes as a new application and can block the application from connecting. So you have to go in and reset the utility to allow iTunes. The same thing can happen if you upgrade the security product (this has particularly been a problem with recent McAfee upgrades).

Check the settings for your utility and if necessary remove and re-enable the exception for iTunes (consult your utility's documentation for the appropriate procedure). You may also need to check the built-in Windows firewall as well.

Hope this helps.

this message is to "dave sawyer".......i have seen your response in ALOT of discussions - the same exact response also. are you an apple employee? if so...why in the world is apple ignoring this problem ALOT of their customers are having with accessing the itunes store??????? if you aren't with apple, i apologize.

i don't have virus protection. i have turned off my firewall and every other possible program or setting that could block the store. it seems to me that apple needs to put out a new version of itunes that actually works - especially with windows vista. i have scoured the discussion boards, uninstalled and reinstalled the program and performed EVERY other possible "step" i could find (even installing an old version of itunes) and this stupid problem has NOT changed. i hope that there is some relief soon.

I agree. I am tired of everyone saying that it's my Firewall/Virus protection. I quadruple checked it and even have turned it off.

iTunes is just working when it wants to. I tried to purchase a TV show yesterday and while iTunes was happy enough to take record my purchase in my account history (in preparation to charge me) it won't let me download the show. When I check for purchases I get this message "The iTunes store is temporarily unavailable. Please try again later." 2 days later and still same message. And yet when I try and download a free song...no problem. A free TV Show...no problem.

Obviously something is wrong with iTunes and not my computer. When this happened last week with a different TV Show I got the same Virus/Firewall run around from iTunes support. Nothing they suggested helped. And then on the 500th time I tried to "Check Purchases" it decided to work.

And Dave Sawyer, this is not directed at you. I've appreciated your help and suggestions in the past on other problems. I am just frustrated that iTunes is more interested in pointing fingers and shifting blame than in solving our problems.

Dave just thought i would wade in to this discussion. Have turned all my security off also uninstalled it as it was freeware still get message connection has timed out sorry but iTunes does suck as far as windows vista is concerned.
While I am here anyone got any ideas or do we throw iTunes in the bin and use windows media player?

I'm having the same problem when I purchased Tin Man. 'Night One' and 'Night Three' downloaded just fine, but when 'Night Two' was finalizing it said it couldn't connect because of Error(-50). So I turned iTunes off and it just disappered. 'Night Two' is in my download file but iTunes won't let me finish downloading. Its been at least a week, and now I have two songs that I need to download, but it comes up with the same error you guys are getting. Now after screwing with my internet security, I'm getting warnings I never got before and popups keep appearing. And after trying on 3 different computers, I'm certain its iTunes thats screwed up. Unless Apple can solve this problem I;m really considering cutting off any business I have with iTunes, even switching from an iPod to a Zune. Apple should report these problems to whoever runs and manages this company, so he/she will know that there are may unsatisfied customers.

I have just spent hours with online AOL support regarding my inability to access the itunes store, since I couldn't get anything from itunes except referral to articles that didn't solve my problem. Finally I got an AOL tech who solved it for me. Here are the steps that worked:
1. Open Internet Exployer
2. Open Tools, then Internet Options, then Advanced, then reset and OK. THIS solved my problem and I can now access the store. Hope it works for someone else!
