Which iPod model is yours, seems you get the wrong cable .. read the review below

DO NOT BUY THIS CABLE IF YOU HAVE IPOD MODEL 2007+ (iPod video etc). This cable only works for the older models. The new iPods need an AV Composite or the other type (can't remember now) that has the pin plug (the plug at the bottom of the iPod). I bought this AV cable thinking I found a cheaper option but took it back after it didn't work (the iPod didn't even recognise that the cable was inserted) and had 3 electronics guys scratching their heads as to why it wasn't working but we eventually found the problem - it's for older iPods only (the more chunky ones) Hopefully it will help the many confused people who seem to have this problem

The High-Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) is a compact audio/video connector interface for transmitting uncompressed digital streams. It represents a digital alternative to consumer analog standards such as Radio Frequency (RF) coaxial cable, composite video, S-Video, SCART, component video, D-Terminal, and VGA.

For the time being, you can't use one HDMI cable to connect between you TV and the iPod. You can check out this instead

That cable works with the older 5th generation video iPods and I think with the older "Photo" iPods as well. Both of these models could output video signals out of the third contact of the headphone jack. Newer iPods, like the Classic, no longer output video through the headphone jack.
