Shuffle not showing up in itunes

HI I just got a second hand 2nd gen ipod shuffle, the last user used to add files to the folder on her desktop rather than via itunes. Now I want to do it via itunes, but it doens't even show up, tied it on a mac and a pc, tried the 5 R's, don't know what to do now, any ideas?

Also, there is a red light on top and bottom, and it goes off once I plug it into the computer, is that normal charging?
Thanks everyone!

WHAT application was the last user using instead of iTunes?

NOT normal at all... the status LED should show either solid or blinking orange.

Thanks for that...

She says "all i do is send music from my music file to it then thats it" which I take to mean she puts MP3s into the folder (the hard drive part) - I tried that with MP3s and it works, but it's no good for all my music ripped from CDs into the itunes music format.

So the red light going off is really bad then? I'm trying to charge it up to see if that changes, but it doesn't seem to.

From that description I believe that you actually have a FAKE shuffle and NOT a genuine Apple iPod shuffle. Apple iPod shuffles do NOT just play mp3s without the use of iTunes (or alternate iPod manager software)...

see above... I suggest you ask your friend about the provenance of this device.
