Pins inside charger port bent

Hi,

The charger for my iBook has played up for months, as it would only charge when the LED ring was a dim green, and not on the bright green or orange settings. To do this, I often had to wedge something underneath it as it would only go this colour if it was bent upwards.

One day last week I pulled the charger out and the end had come off - I fished around inside but couldn't work out where it had gone. I then looked at this forum, and it told me that it usually fell out the other side, but mine hadn't. So I kept fishing around, and stuck a bent safety pin down there (with the battery out, of course) and kept trying to get the pin out. After much frustration and no success, I took it to a friend who is good with Macs and computers in general. He had a look inside and said that what has happened is that I have inadvertently bent a pin inside the charger port over. I have spent quite literally hours trying to bend it back, but with no success. I have borrowed chargers with the tip still on the end, and tried my own, but nothing is charging it. I am getting increasingly frustrated as it contains crucial coursework on it that I need for reference and I am unable to get to it. I need a quick solution!

If anyone has any ideas please let me know - I will try anything. I am pretty much expecting that I will have to change the whole charger board/socket inside as it is probably beyond repair, so if you have any outlandish ideas please tell me anyway as I will try pretty much anything to try and get this to work!

Thank you very much,

Liam

Depending on which iBook G4 model you have, the part number of the DC-in Board may vary; as
could the cost to buy the part and have it installed. This should cure the issue. A reputable
authorized repair tech should be able to do the job; in the US there are several places who do
repairs and have parts in stock Some users have gotten the instruction page off the web and
tried fixing their out-of-warranty iBooks. Sometimes, it's easier to take it in or send it off, for a fix.
The qualified repairer often includes a guarantee of sorts for a duration after a repair; whilst the
home fixer-upper may have only a headache after a failed repair job or new issues after old ones.
