ditto

what is ditto and why is it using 99.9% of my cpu. i am trying to update a poker site that i use and once it is just about updated i get archive utility on but that also never gets all the way through. Help please!

macbook, Mac OS X (10.4.7)

ditto is a Unix command you can use in the Terminal to copy files. It's not entirely clear to me what it is you're doing, what do you mean by "update a poker site"? Did you download some software that you're trying to install? Which "archive utility" are you talking about? You can use the Finder to "create archive" of files or folders and this will create a .zip file for you. I suppose, it's possible the back-end process that is creating the .zip file could be calling the ditto command.

Doug is, in my opinion, right on it. Open Console (utilities folder) and look at the messages. You can prevent the 99% takeover by killing the process - which you possibly know you can do in Activity Monitor. The file is likely corrupt or otherwise has some compatibility problems and it fails. The problem is most likely on their end. I'd contact them because their upgrade may not probably load on your system.
