Hooking Up Apple TV Using HDMI to DVI (no sound)

I have hooked up my Apple TV to my Phillips TV using an HDMI to DVI cable. As it says, I also hooked up RCA audio cables to the Apple TV and to the audio inputs on the TV itself. Unfortunatley, I get a picture from my Apple TV movies, but no sound. The sound is coming over another AV channel on my TV, but I can't get the two to synch up so I can watch the picture with sound. Any advice. Should I use the optical audio plug on my Apple TV with the DVI audio input on my TV??? Would that work?? Are there different types of RCA cables or something?? Any advice would be appreciated.

Welcome to the  Discussion Forums.

As you say you have audio and video on two different inputs on your tv. I'd be a little surprised if the DVI input didn't have some audio input associated with it but who knows. It may well be as you suggest that the optical port performs this function, you'll get a clearer indication by looking at the labelling on the back of your tv.

Thanks. The official Apple TV instructions tell me what to do for someone in my situation. I have a TV with DVI only, not HDMI, which means I need separate audio cables, since DVI doesn't support audio, apparently. I've done what it says, and I get sound, but just not on the same "channel" on my TV. I get a picture on one channel and the sound is coming through on another. I can't figure out why, but perhaps the official Apple instructions could be wrong??

sounds like it's more about how your tv handle input
then how appletv work the rca just put out normal audio like any ipod or walkman or phone might put out

how the reciever in this case your tv handle the audio input in relation to how it handle dvi inpur or optical input and place it on whatever channel it 100% controlled by the tv
and it could variate from tv manufacturer to tv manufacturer
so apple could be hard pressed making guides to cover them all

so if you connected your computer to the tv the same way using dvi to dvi and audio out to rca in you would be facing the same issue

As Rudegar states, your issue is with the tv not the tv.

At the back of your tv you will have several inputs (TV, AV1, AV2, DVI etc) you cannot use more than one at a time, so if you have plugged the audio into AV1, you won't get sound when your tv is switched to DVI, or video when switched to AV1. You need to plug your audio leads into audio sockets associated with DVI.

It's not likely you don't have such a socket, but not impossible. If you are still struggling post the make and model of your tv and I'll see if I can help further.
