it should be.

when i got my iphone, a few months before my old 2 year contract expired they just changed it over and i didnt get charged any thing other than the activation fee and the normal stuff. they might charge an activation fee but i dont think they will screw you over, its more so for those that want to cancel the contract out right. but do call to confirm

The AT&T store does put you under contract for 2 years even if you don't buy the phone from them. They further told me that every time I purchase a new iPhone the contract period starts over for 2 years. I believe this has something to do with Apple getting $20 a month from AT&T for each activation for 2 years (so $20 of what we pay AT&T monthly is going to Apple as I understand it). This is very unfortunate since AT&T service is not great in the Atlanta area. More bars or not, I get more dropped calls now than I had with Verizon.

What you were told is wrong.

at&t puts an iPhone owner under contract only when the iPhone purchased from Apple or from at&t is activated with at&t - which must be done by the buyer thru iTunes.

I am under contract with at&t - signing a new two year contract on my iPhone's activation date. My iPhone was exchanged under warranty during the first month. I did not sign a new 2-yr contract when activating the exchange. If my iPhone was lost or stolen and I purchased another, I would not be required to sign a new 2-yr contract for my replacement. The contract is not tied to a particular iPhone since the iPhone is not subsidized by at&t in the traditional way. If my iPhone was lost or stolen, I could purchase a cheap go-phone as s replacement and cancel the unlimited data plan for my iPhone with no penalty, as long as I fulfill my contract which doesn't have to be with an iPhone.

The folks at this at&t store who told you this baloney must have been sleeping during this part of their training. Hard to believe they remain so clueless about this after nearly a year.

I also have a business phone with Verizon so I have constant side by side comparison. "Can you hear me know?" - is as much if not more of a joke than "more bars in more places". I left Verizon for personal use due to crummy reception - they let me out of my contract a year early because of this at my house, and sine of the places I frequent most.

I upgraded my iPhone to more memory and my original iPhone was purchased Sept 2007. I got new iPhone in March 2008. My contract remained from Sept 2007 - Sept 2009 from the first purchase of the first iPhone. To double check this info you can log into your online account with AT&T with your cell number and password and on your cell number on the main page when you log in. In blue it says "my profile" you can check your contract date there too and make sure it stayed the same from the date of the original iPhone purchase.
