Yamaha P140.. able to connect to Garageband?

My keys player has a Mac and a great Yamaha P-140. I don't believe it has USB outs though.

Would he be able to use this keyboard as a midi controller through GB without a USB out?

I'm sure it has a midi out port.... Maybe there is some chance of a midi to USB cable that may work?

How do you disable the sounds from the keyboard from playing so that you can use GB as the brains of the keyboard?

Thanks!

Jay.

You need a MIDI interface - you can buy a simple thing for not too much money that will give you MIDI in and out (although the out isn't usable with Garageband) and will plug into a USB socket.

If you might want to record with a microphone or instrument in the future, then it might be as well to think about it now and buy an audio interface (most of them include MIDI in/out as well).

There should be a setting on your keyboard called 'Local off' which disengages the direct input from the keyboard but sends the MIDI out for just such a situation.

So this is what my buddy has.

http://www.m-audio.com/products/en_us/MIDISPORT2x2-main.html

We found the switch so that sound no longer comes out of the keyboard (it's some convaluted function F8.3).. ay yai yai....

But GB doesn't see it.. or hear it.

Any idea? We installed the drivers but the interface that comes with the unit is confusing as all ****.

Thanks!

Jay.
