Upgrade from 8.5.1 to 8.6

I have an 8 year on iMac G3 CRT 266MHz OS 8.5.1. without internet access.
Got CD with upgrade to OS 8.6 .Understand most instructions EXCEPT
"Start up using the Mac "OS CD"

I understand holding down "C" etc BUT WHICH CD is the "OS CD"?
I have one "Software Install" and one "Software Restore" ?
Which is the "MAC OS CD"???
Nothing in Support seems to identify this.
I hope the upgrade to 8.6 will allow me to use a flash drive to export my data to a newer machine.

imac, Mac OS 8.6 or Earlier

Even if running OS 8.6, I'd recommend that you download/use "TomeViewer" to extract the USB support files from the downloadable Mac OS 9.1 Update. Extract the necessary files to the Extensions folder. The USB support files included with OS 9.1 provided wider support for USB mass storage devices. If you'd like to do so, post back for more details.

The utility "TomeViewer" is comparable to using WinZip, in that it lets you extract specific files from an installer tome, in the same manner as extracting an individual file or files from a Windows CAB file. Try the USB Support Installer 1.3.5 that Kappy linked for you, and see if your flash drive is recognized. Even with a newer version of the USB Support (1.4.1) on my iMac DV running OS 8.6, my Memorex USB flash drive wasn't recognized. On a hunch, I updated the files with the newer USB Support files (version 1.4.5) from the OS 9.1 Update. After I did, the flash drive mounted normally. From that time, I automatically updated any of my OS 8.6 Macs with OS 9.1's newer USB support files.

The download "tomeviewer.sit" is a compressed file. The ".sit" suffix indicates a Stuffit archive, that requires Stuffit Expander (for Macs) to expand (don't expand it on your PC). This utility may already be installed on the iMac's hard drive, possibly in the Apple Extras or CD Extras folder. If not, you'll need to download an older version (such as 5.x or 6.x) that's compatible with OS 8.6. A Google search (also try "versiontracker.com") should find a link for the older (free) download. Additionally, you'll need to download the 71 MB Mac OS 9.1 Update from Apple. If you decide to do so, post back and I'll provide the specific USB Support files that you'll need to extract (from the OS 9.1 Update) to the OS 8.6 Extensions folder.

I'd pick "Software Install". This should upgrade your system if it's not at 8.6. However, I'd download and install the upgrade listed below.

Here is just the upgrade:

If you have both the "TomeViewer" application and the Mac OS 9.1 Update, begin by double-clicking the "TomeViewer" icon to launch the program. Click on the "File" drop-down menu at the upper left of the screen, select "Open," and then navigate to and open the "Mac OS 9.1 Update." Next, open "Software Installers," then open "System Software," then open "Mac OS 9.1," and finally open "Installer Tome." You'll see a very long list of every software component that's included in the Tome, with each one having a unique ID #. You'll want to extract the following items having these ID numbers and names: #175 EnetShimLib, #240 HID Library, #440 SerialShimLib, #512 USB Device Extension, #513 USB Mass Storage Support, #516 USB Software Locator, and #517 USB Support. You can choose to extract each one directly to the Extensions folder by navigating to that destination, when you extract the first item. If you extract all of them to the desktop, you'll need to drag them to the Extensions folder. You'll be prompted as to whether you want to replace the older (existing) files of the same name with the new ones - which you'll choose "Yes." After that's completed, restart the computer and the newer USB support files will be activated. Plug in your flash drive, and it should mount on the desktop. Sorry, I don't correspond privately with Forum users. When topics are discussed and worked out in the forums, others have access to any and all solutions described, which (hopefully) helps them solve similar issues.
