iChat status message

Curiously, in the last few days or so, if any of my AIM buddies are online and they are using the default "Available" status message, I see their name and the green light next to their name on my AIM Buddy List but the status message is either missing or it is an incorrect message such as "Away" even though I know they are online and available. If they switch to any custom message, I am able to see the custom message under their name. If they truly do go "Away", I am able to see the "Away" message under their name. Only when they choose "Available" is it either missing or incorrect, in most cases missing. Originally, it was just one buddy and I thought the issue might be at her end but tonight, it is happening with multiple buddies, including my wife here in the same house. I checked her status on her computer and it said "Available" but on my computer under her name, it's just blank. Any thoughts?

All My Buddies that appear to be using the Default Available and Away settings show no Status messages and are blank under their name.

I only see messages for the people that have set Status Messages (either Custom Available or Custom Away ones)

I have seen people report that they can see the Status setting as the Status message.

I would try deleting com.apple.ichat.AIM.plist in Users/(your account)/Library/Preferences and restart iChat as a first step.

I did not mention it specifically but did you restart iChat afterwards ?

I hate to suggesting a Re-install of iChat just yet.

Deleting com.apple.iChat.plist in itself will have cleared your Saved Status Messages.

This may seem odd but try this.

If Wireless shut down the Airport card.
**** down the computer
Disconnect any Ethernet cable form the modem/router or computer (whichever is easier)
Restart the computer
Restart iChat.
Restart the Wireless card or reconnect the ethernet cable.
Log In to AIM

None of the help suggested so far has worked but I've learned something new. I took a look at my son's MacBook iChat and he has the same issue, that is, his iChat will not show the status of an on-line buddy if that buddy has chosen "Available" as the status message. So this issue is not unique to my Mac but it may be unique to all of the Macs in my house/on my network (4) although I can't figure out how or why that could happen unless it is a universal bug in this latest version of iChat. Any further thoughts would be appreciated.
One other question. You implied that you were not yet ready to advise Re-installing iChat just yet. How exactly could one go about re-installing just iChat. Isn't it an integral part of Leopard that would require re-installing all of Leopard or is there a way to just install individual programs from Leopard. I've looked at the installation options more than once over the years and that level of installation control did not seem to be available.

Is port 5190 open on the UDP protocol in any settings on your Mac and in any routing device ? (UPnP will cover this if you are using that).

Try Logging out of AIM then go to iChat > Preferences > Accounts > Sever settings for the AIM/@mac name and set the Login port to 443
You can only change it when logged out.

Some modems seem to have problems with iChat using port 5190 on TCP to Login and on UDP to get info for the Buddy List and certain Text chats and sending files

I guess I have lost my mind but I've now checked with a number of users, all of whom swear that when a buddy chooses the default "Available" status, it never shows under the name because, apparently, with the green light and no custom messages chosen, it is assumed that the status is available and therefore there is no need to show it. I could swear that I used to see "Available" under people's names up until last week but as I said, I must be losing my mind. At least I feel better that probably nothing is actually wrong with my Mac or iChat.
