ALL Files corrupted including (JPG's and Photoshop 6)on Hard drive w/ OS9

I am new to this forum as of now; so I hope i can ask the right way!
I have(HAD) a iMac G3 DV slot with 10GB hard drive(Running only OS 9.2.2)- That i had to take in for repair (turned out to be bad video card or something) - BUT: The repairman corrupted ALL my files!!! (That iMac is gone now- but i have the left over drive(laying here for 2 years or so now) with MANY original photos - Before I had any other external drives or other Mac's to back up on) I can see the directory and open folders but the applications like Photoshop CAN NOT recognize a simple JPG or PSD or anyother file.
How i know this is: I (finally could) put the hard drive inside my (new) POWERMAC G4 MDD and tried to access Norton Disk DR to repair files, but it would not work I guess because OS X tiger overrides OS 9 classic/ BUT the hard drive itself is apparently fully functional and could be reformatted and used. (NOTE:I did get a replacement iMac G3 DV model with new hard drive)
I have tried everything and i have searched online for answers( til I am literally blue in the face!)
I am at a brick wall.
the only thing I think I could try is; take apart my old FUNCTIONAL iMac G3 and stick in the corrupted hard drive and try to boot up from the NORTON SYSTEM WORKS Disc for OS 9 and run Disk DR.
- Taking apart the machine seems like a bunch of risky work, but my files are UNREABLE and therefore unusable - lost.
does any one have any ideas? and is swapping hard drives and trying to boot up with Norton worth it?

You can't run Norton's pre-OS X repair utilities in Classic Mode. Did you try placing the Norton disk (either Norton SystemWorks - version 1.0.x or Norton Utilities - version 6.0.x) in the optical drive, restarting the computer, and holding down the C key to boot from it? Once booted from the Norton disk, you don't want to run any scans of your OS 10.4.x boot drive. Select the problematic disk and run Disk Doctor to see what directory and/or file damage has occurred. If it can repair it, let it attempt to do so. If it reports that all errors have been corrected, run it again to be sure. If the drive has directory corruption, the consensus of opinion in these Forums is that Alsoft's "DiskWarrior" is the best utility for correcting that type of problem. It retails for $100, so if recovering your files is worth it, you may want to look into it. In spite of any warnings to the contrary, I never had any problems using the referenced versions of Norton Utilities and/or SystemWorks on my pre-OS X hard drives.

"Stellar Phoenix Macintosh - Mac data recovery software, recovers data from damaged, deleted, or corrupted volumes and even from initialized disks."
They have a trial version, so I guess you can see if your data can be recovered...

"Data Rescue II is the best data recovery software on the market for recovering files from a problem hard drive. Data Rescue II works when other tools fail. Data Rescue II is also completely safe to use since it does not attempt any risky repairs to the drive while its scanning."

FileSalvage is an extremely powerful Macintosh application for exploring and recovering deleted files from a drive or volume. FileSalvage is designed to restore files that have:

* been accidentally deleted.
* become unreadable due to media faults.
* been stored on a drive before it was re-initialized/formatted.

PhotoGirl1959...

I believe Nortons scrambled your files as it got to the point that Nortons become a Mac OS "Specific (xx.xx.xx)" repair utility. Unlikely the repair tech had anything to do with the data loss, but regardless, any backup plan should have been implemented long before this ever became an issue. Hard Drives can fail at any given point, leaving you helpless, other than spending a good fortune to some data recovery service.

Thanks guys for some quick responses to a painful problem.
#1:_out of these options and opinions so far, do any of you vote for me to crack open the old iMac G3 and swap hard drives to attempt a recovery?_ (I beliveve I have that DATA recovery software that came on a disk with a Sandisk Extreme IV, compact flash drive- If that would work for this; I sure had NOT even thought of that software!)

-SINCE the Power mac G4 MDD did not let me access Nortons tools to even try a recovery when i had that drive hooked up inside it? ( and I tryed everything I knew and new things i learned, but was stonewalled at every try)
#2: Or( as Ron says:) is it basic as; Norton has scrambled my files from when the machine had its video malfunction? and I assumed the info was damaged while in his shop. since he was mostly interested in selling a new battery and hard drive and never did fix or understand the video problem.??
I know I can't spend $1000 - 2500 on recovery. I emailed about that after I read an article in MacWorld! if i was rich I might give a hail mary pass to those recovery folks, but i am too low on the food chain, and forgetting about the 1000's of photos seems more likely.
I am still open to your thoughts before i get out my screw drivers and reading glasses! AND a big THANK YOU for responding to my problem.
Sincerely, Barbara

I can NOT run it in CLASSIC MODE, that explains many hours of wasted time. I did restart with disk in optical drive a few times more than i should have probably.
I Never was able to ACTUAL SELECT THE DISK. That was a huge point of frustration - at one point it asked me to install a newer OLD VERSION of QuickTime... which I started up classic INTERNET EXPlorer 5.0 and searched and found it! and downloaded and installed that - eventually. Did not seem to make the over all situation better. but I think Classic mode was happy or happier...
The thing about the C KEY holding it down in my restart attempts Never worked. I never understood that, except now by what you said that it won't run in classic mode: that is as close to "getting it" as I have gotten, so far. working with the dual systems is not my strong suit; I have had to teach myself Tiger cold turkey style. I was great with OS 9 and when i jumped in the PANTHER pond I did OK but it (OS X) is a level (or a few) above my mental pay scale it seems.
THANKS.
Barbara

Hey Photogirl,
I would suggest as RC says to try Data Rescue II. I've had the most success with that in rescuing lost data in clients' HDs and the first step is free so you can tell if it works before you spend the $99.

I had given up on Norton many years ago while still running OS 9 (never been a fan of Classic Mode either). It's typical response was "Norton found errors it couldn't repair, sorry, quitting now". I paraphrase but you get the idea. I would always add "now it's really screwed up and nothing will fix it" but that was before I used DR II. Haven't revisited that problem in many years.

I work on a lot of iMac CRTs (60 or so over the last few years) and any video problem I've ever seen was always associated with the PAV board. That is to say the power supply for the machine. Never seen a video chip problem (there is no card) or even a logic board problem.

If you can lay hands on a FireWire cable (6 pin to 6 pin) another option is to put the hard drive back in the MDD and start up in "target" mode. Then hook it up to your G3 and see if it shows up there. I have 2 drives on the IDE buss in my MDD and I just did that and all 7 partitions show up on my iMac Planar 800.

If you want to go ahead with the "surgery" email me.

Richard

Richard:
*_This sounds logical about using the firewire to send the drive info to the iMac. The only part i think I will still have problem with is STARTING UP IN TARGET MODE_*.
That was one of those issues i ran into with trying to get the old disk to run while _in MDD_.
I also checked my software box and i _was mistaked about what software came with_ my Compact Flash cards; it is just for memory cards recovery. and it was Not DR II_.

i tried to email you: but truthfully i do not know how these forums work too much. and i have a big wiggly cat tring to take over my keyboard as i speak!

*My question first;* *is HOW CAN I GET A START UP IN TARGET MODE ( OR WHAT DOES THAT MEAN? IF I HAVE A OS9 HD INSIDE THAT IS ILL?)

_I GET THE IDEA OF USING THE IMAC AS A HOST FOR THAT ILL DRIVE_. BUT FROM ALL THAT HOURS AND HOURS OF WORK I DID FROM THIS MDD MACHINE _I QUESTION IF "I" AM CAPABLE OF CONTROLING THE MACHINE TO DO WHAT YOU SUGGESTED....?_ with TRAGET mode start up?

if you have any hints to help me "get it", i think (along with this cat here) we can give a good effort!

Also, I will check into the free part of Data Rescue II, and see if that can be used.

I want to try this before any SURGURY!!

*AND yes you are sure right about the "NORTON FOUND ERROR" and "MACHINE IS QUITTING NOW" thing, that stonewalled me in sorts while i was trying to use it on this MDD, but the other man(JEFF) said i could not use CLASSIC MODE with my Norton OS 9 program anyway. but I hacked at it for long enough!

THANKS So much.
I will take it one thing at a time at this point. everyone is being great with this info!
I think us MAC folks are great anyway.

**I saw on CNN tonight that in the amount of emails sent every day - 2 million per second are sent and 70% is spam and virus. THAT IS the WIndows OS world for you. the spam i understand to a point, they're selling some crap. but virus activity is well; counter productive and I have things to do that are productive. (confession; i do have a cheap, windows xp laptop too)

-- SO IN MY QUEST FOR HELP HERE: THANKS TO ALL WHO HAVE reached out to me so far (and I appologise for my lack of OS X knowledge) it hasn't helped i have been feeling ill myself! but i try to keep at it.

Hey Barbara,
My question first; *is HOW CAN I GET A START UP IN TARGET MODE

Starting up in target mode:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1661
"Start up the target computer and immediately press and hold down the T key until the FireWire icon appears. The hard disk of the target computer should become available to the host computer and will likely appear on desktop. (If the target computer is running Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger, you can also open System Preferences, choose Startup Disk, and click Target Disk Mode. Then restart the computer and it will start up in Target Disk Mode.)"

( OR WHAT DOES THAT MEAN? IF I HAVE A OS9 HD INSIDE THAT IS ILL?)

No that won't hurt anything. Target mode means that the MDD becomes a huge, expensive external hard drive case.

i tried to email you:

Just click on "spudnuty" and it will show up.
